Been in the Chicago area my whole career building custom decks and cabinetry, started with a simple referral program last year offering $200 off for every new client who came through a repeat customer. Thought it'd help fill the schedule during slow winters, but damn, most folks just take the discount and ghost us on follow-ups. We use Festool tools for precision work on those inset cabinets, but even that quality ain't enough to get word-of-mouth rolling without chasing people down. Saw a similar rant in Carpenters of America FB group about how designers are killing the margins already, and now this referral BS is just adding to the headache. Tried tracking it in QuickBooks, but the ROI is crap after 10 months. Frustrated as hell, anyone else dealing with this?

Same here man, referrals sound great on paper but people forget after one job.

Feels that. I've been chasing shadows with mine too.

Yeah, it's like herding cats. Switch to incentives for the referrer instead.

Haha, I tried giving free tool rentals as referrals and still nada. What a waste.

Goddamn designers are the real problem, eating all the profit before referrals even factor in. Pisses me off every job.

Referral programs are BS in carpentry, fight me. Just charge more upfront and skip the games.

Screw these homeowners who take the discount and run. The whole system's rigged against us trades.

Amen to that, collective BS from clients and designers alike.

Don't waste time on referrals, one bad word from a cheap client and you're screwed for months.

LOL, yeah my referral 'program' is just me begging friends for leads over beers.

I'm so over it, spent weeks on one referral that fell through and cost me a full day.

Haha, remember that time a referral led to a clown show of changes? Never again.

Referral discounts are for suckers, better off networking with other trades.

Yeah, the markup from designers is highway robbery, referrals just pad their pockets more.

Designers are the worst, inflating costs then expecting us to eat the referrals.

How do you even track ROI on these without losing your mind?

This whole referral thing is a scam perpetuated by big box stores, not for real carpenters.

Haha, yeah my best 'referral' was from a buddy who owed me a favor.

PE firms buying up shops and pushing these garbage programs, it's all about their bottom line.

Insurance companies jacking rates don't help either, makes every referral a risk.

Hit 20 solid referrals last year by tying it to tool giveaways, changed everything.
