15 years building custom cabinetry here in north jersey, and upselling is key to making those built-in bookshelf jobs profitable. Customer comes in wanting simple pine shelves for their den, quote around $3k for the basics with Festool tools to keep it precise, but i always pitch adding soft-close Blum hinges and a matching entertainment center below for another $2.5k. It bumps the total to $5.5k and they bite 70% of the time since it turns a basic job into a full room upgrade. Saw a thread on r/woodworking where guys were complaining about low margins without it, and someone in Carpenters of America FB group swore by showing quick sketches on the spot. Zone 5 winters mean we gotta factor in humidity warps too, so i upsell acclimated maple upgrades. Last week i closed a $7k deal this way on a colonial in morristown. Anyone else using Kreg pocket holes to demo the add-ons during the walkthrough?

Homeowners in jersey always lowball the shelves then nickel and dime on extras, it's BS how they think we're just stacking lumber.

haha yeah or they say 'can you just slap some plywood up there?' like we ain't artists with our Festool routers.

we're getting screwed by these flippers who want pro work for home depot prices.

i upsell by leaving a half-finished mockup on site, they see the potential and sign the add-on sheet same day.

smart, did that with a kitchen island last month, added $1.8k easy.

soft close hinges are gold, but watch out for the cheap imports that fail in a year.

blum is the way, but i demo with samples from my truck to seal the deal.

what's your go-to sketch app for showing upsells on site?
C

sketchup free version, quick and they get it.

don't demo pocket holes without quoting the full install, or you'll eat time on revisions.

feels your pain, upselling in this market is a grind but necessary.

maple in zone 5 is smart, but how do you price the acclimation process?
T
TrimQueen⚒️ Journeyman5mo
11
add $500 flat for the humidity control setup, clients don't question it.

these colonial homeowners think they're getting ikea for custom prices, rage inducing.

start with the pain point, 'shelves alone won't hold up to kids' books without reinforcements' then upsell the maple.
