Carpenter licensing in Texas cost me an arm and a leg, worth it?

Just renewed my Texas carpenter certification and it cost me $450 for the exam and fees alone. Felt like highway robbery for a piece of paper saying I can swing a hammer without the state breathing down my neck. But hey, now I can bid on those bigger commercial framing jobs without getting shut down. Anyone else think these certs are a scam?

Get the journeyman cert from the state board first, it covers most framing and cabinetry basics without the extras. Skip the fancy add-ons unless youre doing high-end custom stuff.

yeah but in texas they make you take that 8-hour course every renewal, total BS.

Fuck these licensing boards, they jack up fees every year to line their pockets while we bust our asses on the job site.

exactly, and then inspectors come in nitpicking our Kreg pocket holes like theyve never seen one before.

We pay $600 a pop for the whole crew's certs in our shop, and half the time it's just to shut up the clients demanding proof.

yep, clients want the cert to feel safe but dont understand it dont make us any better at installing face frames.

This is why i stick to residential trim work, no cert needed and i charge the same as the big boys.

man i feel you, dropped $400 last year and the only upside was landing a $15k deck project.

up here in the sticks, we just trade favors with the local inspector to avoid the hassle.

thats risky as hell, got a buddy fined $2k for no cert on a simple shed build.

ugh, renewing mine was a nightmare, paperwork everywhere and fees doubled.
