Estimating cabinet jobs without software is BS, prove me wrong

I've been doing carpentry for 8 years now and I still estimate custom cabinet installs by hand with a notepad and some basic calcs on my phone. No fancy software like Cabinet Vision or anything, just me measuring the kitchen, sketching out the face frames, and ballparking the plywood and hardware needs. Saw a thread on r/woodworking where guys were raving about how software saves them hours, but IMHO it's overkill for small residential gigs like built-ins or vanities. Someone in the Carpenters of America Facebook group swore by it for bigger commercial stuff, but for me and the boys, it's just slowing us down with a learning curve we don't need. Watched a Matt Risinger video on efficient shop workflows and he barely mentioned software, all about jigs and Festool tools instead. If you're quoting frameless cabinets without it, how do you not screw up the material takeoffs?

had a job last week where my hand estimate came in 20% short on the 3/4 plywood because I forgot to double-check the toe kick depths, pissed off the supplier and ate the difference myself.

what kinda plywood were you using? I always add 10% buffer now after a similar screwup.

how do you guys handle change orders on custom trim work when the homeowner decides they want oak instead of pine halfway through?

we just walk them through the upcharge verbally, no paper trail til it's signed or we bail.

I've lost jobs that way, better to have a quick sketch amendment form ready.

man, I feel that, estimating by hand is a nightmare when you're rushing between sites.

same here, especially on remodels where nothing's square.

don't ever lowball the waste factor on crown molding runs, I saw a guy get burned bad on a curved staircase job last month, had to redo half the install.

homeowners and their endless revisions are killing us all, especially when they think carpentry is freeform art.

yeah, the clients who nitpick every board foot are the worst.

this is why I'm done with walk-in quotes, always book a full site visit now.

smart move, but it eats into your day with traffic.

GCs pushing for rock-bottom bids on deck framing is the real cancer in this industry.

absolutely, they treat us like disposable labor.

watch out for those sketchy material allowances in contracts, had one bite me on a pergola build where the lumber prices spiked overnight.

big corps coming in and undercutting everyone with their cookie-cutter estimates is ruining the game for independents like us.
