man, i've been bustin my ass building custom face frame cabinets for kitchens in the chicago area my whole career, and this google business profile was supposed to help get more leads. got a 1-star from some picky homeowner who said the maple stain didn't match her vision exactly, even though we went over samples twice with benjamin moore advance. now my rating's down to 4.2 and calls dried up overnight. saw a similar rant in carpenters of america facebook group, guys saying ignore it but damn, it's killing my schedule. anyone else dealing with this bs?

reviews are everything until they're not. i've seen guys delete their whole gbp over one troll.
P
PeakProspector⚒️ Journeyman1mo
2
deleting it? nah, that's suicide. just pump out more 5-stars from happy deck jobs.
M
MoveMasterMike2⚒️ Journeyman1mo
12
pumping 5-stars feels shady, like review gating. google will suspend you.
D
DirtDoctor⚒️ Journeyman1mo
11
suspended once for that crap. lost two months of leads on trim work.
B
BenderBuddy⚒️ Journeyman1mo

same here, one pissed client over a warped plywood sheet and poof, reputation in the toilet.
N
NailGunNinja2⚒️ Journeyman1mo
16
who cares about google? word of mouth on stair installs is king anyway.
D
DoorDud⚒️ Journeyman1mo
14
word of mouth don't pay the bills when you're starting out on built-ins.
V
VoltageVagabond2⭐ Expert1mo

starting out? i've been at it 10 years, still chase google for frameless cabinet gigs.
A
ACAvenger2⚒️ Journeyman1mo
15
reply to that bad review professionally, explain the benjamin moore match process. turns it around quick.
G
GarageGuruGary2⚒️ Journeyman1mo
20
did that on a door hanging job. client came back apologizing, bumped it to 5 stars.
B
BugBusterBill⚒️ Journeyman1mo
21
feels your pain, brother. chicago winters make wood move, but they blame you.
F
FrameFailer⚒️ Journeyman1mo
11
GBP is a scam, full stop. fake reviews everywhere from competitors on my shop fitouts.
W
WireWizardWalt⭐ Expert1mo
12
don't fight it, hire a review service. shady but effective for molding work.
C
ComboKey⚒️ Journeyman1mo
3
review services? that's against policy. got flagged and lost my profile.
D
DustDevil2⚒️ Journeyman1mo
10
flagged and back in a week. worth it for the steady cabinet leads.

one bad apple spoils the bunch. had a guy complain about dovetail joints not being perfect.
R
RoofRatRicky⚒️ Journeyman1mo
14
dovetails ain't perfect by hand. machine 'em next time with kreg jig.
P
PlumbDumb⭐ Expert1mo
21
kreg's great but overkill for basic drawers. stick to dados.
J
JunctionJunkie3⚒️ Journeyman1mo
9
dados failed me on a wet bar build. went back to dovetails.
J
JoistJoker⚒️ Journeyman1mo
10
laughable how one review tanks you. mine was from a cat scratching the finish.
B
BugBusterJoe⚒️ Journeyman1mo
10
ask for reviews right after install, before they nitpick the crown molding.
C
ChillMaster6⭐ Expert1mo

google's algorithm hates carpenters. favors the big box stores with fake polish.
T
TarPaperTiger⚒️ Journeyman1mo
19
big box? they use mdf crap. we do real oak, but yeah, they rank higher.
V
VoltageVampire⭐ Expert1mo
19
oak warps in humidity. switch to quartersawn for stability.
G
GreenthumbGreg⚒️ Journeyman1mo
35
had the same with a pergola job. client said it blocked too much sun.
B
BrushStrokeBoss11⚒️ Journeyman1mo
21
pergolas are hit or miss. document everything with photos before sign-off.
L
LeakHunterPro⚒️ Journeyman1mo
19
documented a whole kitchen reno, still got dinged on hinge alignment.
N
NailBiterCarp⚒️ Journeyman1mo
13
hinges are finicky with euro style. use blum for better adjust.
T
TileTerror5⚒️ Journeyman1mo
16
blum's pricey but saves callbacks on cabinet doors.
S
ShingleShark15⚒️ Journeyman1mo
13
callbacks kill profits. one bad review from that and you're screwed.
T
TarpTitan3⚒️ Journeyman1mo
15
screwed indeed. lost a bid on trim package cuz of 4.1 rating.
S
SweepSquad3⚒️ Journeyman1mo
20
bid low to rebuild rating. take the hit on a small job.
D
DoorJammer2⚒️ Journeyman1mo
9
took a hit on baseboards, now at 4.7. worth it.
V
VoltageVagabond⚒️ Journeyman1mo
20
4.7 still feels low when you're pouring soul into custom work.
L
LeakHunter5⚒️ Journeyman1mo
4
soul? it's a business. chase the stars.
P
PipeLord4209⚒️ Journeyman1mo
3
stars from who? fake accounts? this whole system's rigged against small shops.
S
SprayTanSavant⭐ Expert1mo
17
rigged af. saw essential craftsman talk about it on his channel, ignoring google altogether.
S
SawdustSavant26⚒️ Journeyman1mo
4
essential craftsman? that guy's gold. his take on hand tool joinery changed my game.
C
ChillChampion2⚒️ Journeyman1mo
16
join local fb groups like contractors network, get referrals there instead.
D
DoorOpener99⚒️ Journeyman1mo
18
contractors network hooked me up with a deck sub last month.
V
VentVet⭐ Expert1mo
11
decks pay better than cabinets anyway. less fuss with finishes.
W
WattTheHeck25⚒️ Journeyman1mo
15
finishes are where the money's at. charge extra for pre-catalyzed lacquer.
D
DoorJamDud⚒️ Journeyman1mo
17
lacquer bubbles in chicago humidity. stick to waterborne poly.
V
VacuumVince⚒️ Journeyman1mo
15
poly's fine but yellows over time on light woods.
F
FloorFitterFred⚒️ Journeyman1mo
14
yellowing? use uv inhibitors. problem solved on my flooring side gigs.
D
DoorOpenerDave⚒️ Journeyman1mo
12
side gigs keeping me afloat while google sorts itself.
V
VentMaster992⚒️ Journeyman1mo
14
google never sorts. it's a crapshoot for us trades.
W
WrenchWiz2⚒️ Journeyman1mo
18
trades get screwed. one review from ex-employee and boom.
K
KeyMaster3000⚒️ Journeyman1mo
4
ex-employee? fire 'em and move on. don't let it linger.
A
ArcFlashAl⭐ Expert1mo
13
lingering reviews haunt you. had one from 5 years ago still hurting.
P
PaintSplatter2⚒️ Journeyman1mo
2
5 years? request removal if it's policy violation.
R
RodentRidder2⚒️ Journeyman1mo
34
removal denied every time. google's bots are dumb.
C
CanvasCrusader⭐ Expert1mo
11
dumb bots favoring big money. small carpentry shops get no love.
R
RollerRabbit⚒️ Journeyman1mo
15
no love, just headaches. time to pivot to instagram reels of builds.
L
LockoutLou⚒️ Journeyman1mo
21
reels worked for my shop front. doubled leads in a month.
G
GreenThumbGuy⚒️ Journeyman1mo
1
doubled? what's your niche, outdoor structures?
A
AmpedUp5⚒️ Journeyman1mo
19
niche is gazebos. post timelapses, people eat it up.
S
SpringSpecialist3⭐ Expert1mo
4
gazebos in chicago? wind'll take 'em down.
B
BreakerBreaker⚒️ Journeyman1mo
10
wind-proof with proper anchoring. use lag screws into concrete.
R
RoofRat887⚒️ Journeyman1mo
15
lags failed me once. switched to expansion anchors.
T
TrackTech2⚒️ Journeyman1mo
17
expansion anchors for the win on pergola bases.
G
GreenThumbGuru2⚒️ Journeyman1mo

man, one shitty review on google can bury your whole business like a bad concrete pour. been there with a landscaping gig where some karan lost her shit over a misplaced shrub, and suddenly im invisible in local searches. feels like the algorithm's got it out for us small guys. hang in there, brother, weve all eaten that dirt.
T
TermiteTamer⚒️ Journeyman1mo

bounced back from a one-star termite fiasco last year by flooding my google profile with pics of flawless jobs and video testimonials from happy customers, now im pulling in $15k months easy.
D

pergolas again. you guys love the outdoors stuff.
L
LiftMaster3⚒️ Journeyman1mo

P

picky indoors got me that bad review. lesson learned.
L

lesson: get 50% upfront on custom work.
