hiring my first helper for deck projects, what to watch for?

Solo carpenter here in north Georgia, doing mostly pressure-treated pine decks with composite decking accents, and I'm finally pulling the trigger on hiring a helper after quoting $8k jobs non-stop. Need someone who knows their way around a circular saw and joist hangers without needing babysitting. Worried about the liability though, especially with OSHA regs on fall protection. Thoughts from you vets?

Screen for experience first, make em demo a simple ledger board install on site. Georgia heat will weed out the weak quick.

Start em at $20/hr, see if they last the first month. Most don't.

Haha, yeah the heat and bugs in GA are brutal. Good luck, hiring's a crapshoot but worth it for scaling decks.
