I've been running a simple referral setup for my carpentry side hustle, where I give folks a $50 Home Depot gift card for every new client they send my way who books a job over four hours. It's mostly for built-in shelving and custom trim work, and honestly, it's turned a couple of repeat customers into my best marketers without me chasing leads. I keep track of it all in a basic Google Sheet, nothing fancy, but it weeds out the tire-kickers real quick. Last month, it brought in three solid gigs for kitchen remodels, and the word-of-mouth feels more genuine than any ad I've tried. The gift cards don't break the bank, and clients love the perk since they're always needing more supplies anyway. Anyone else using something similar for their woodworking projects? Saw a thread on r/woodworking about tying perks to specific tools, but I kept it simple with the card.

how do you handle it if the referral job falls through after they book but dont show? i had a guy flake once and wasnt sure whether to still give the card. whats your cutoff for that kinda thing?

man, i feel that - been chasing leads like a dog after its tail til i started a 25 buck visa card referral for my plumbing gigs, now the tire kickers are history and word spreads without the bs ads.

hell yeah, $50 gift cards are genius, keeps the referrals comin without me shellin out for some fancy software that'd just crash on the jobsite anyway. had a buddy try one of those ai design affiliates, ended up with more spam leads than actual cabinets ordered, lol. stick to the simple stuff, it'll outlast the hype every time.

i bumped my referral perk to $75 amazon cards last year and it doubled my custom cabinet leads without any hassle.

i do the same but with a $75 visa card instead of home depot, keeps it flexible for whatever they need on the job. switched to jobber for tracking referrals last year and it cut my paperwork time in half.

man, those ads on angi and thumbtack are straight-up robbery, charging us an arm and a leg for crappy leads that ghost you half the time. your $50 gift card setup is genius because it skips that BS and turns happy customers into free marketers without the middleman screwing us over. i've tried their crap before and it ate into my margins like crazy, never again. keeps it real and profitable, just like it should be.

yeah man, ads are a total scam sucking my wallet dry while these referral gigs actually bring in real work without the BS from angi leads.

gift cards are a scam waiting to happen, op - one pissed client accuses you of bribery and suddenly you're explaining it to the irs instead of building cabinets.

try offering a choice between the home depot card or a discount on their next job, like 10% off, it gets em more excited about referrin folks without costin you extra.
