had this one client today who wanted me to build a custom floating shelf in her kitchen using some reclaimed oak we sourced. she hands me this printout from pinterest and it's clearly a frameless cabinet setup with hidden euro hinges, not a shelf at all. i tried explaining the difference but she just kept insisting it had to 'float' without any visible supports. ended up sketching out a proper design with hidden brackets and a Festool Domino for the joints to make it sturdy. now she's all excited but i'm wondering if i'll have to deal with more confusion during install. anyone else get these mix-ups where diy dreams crash into real carpentry? what's the funniest client request you've had to redirect?

next time try using a kreg pocket hole jig for quicker prototypes to show clients the difference between a true floating shelf and a cabinet install.

god, these pinterest pros always show up with cabinet pics for shelves and act like we're the idiots when we explain reality. had a lady last week demand a floating mantel that looked exactly like a euro-hinged base cabinet, wasted two hours drawing options she ignored.

pinterest is the devil for this crap, every time a homeowner brings in one of those pics it's some half-baked frameless setup that ain't even close to a real floating shelf. these clients got no clue and it's on us to clean up their diy fantasies every damn job.

pinterest fantasies are BS, just charge em double to educate their ass on real face frame construction and watch em rethink that frameless pipe dream.

goddamn pinterest is the WORST for these clueless homeowners thinking every cabinet pic is a 'floating' whatever they dreamed up, drives me nuts every time.

man, i feel that, had a guy once bring in a pic of a full-on built-in bench thinking it was just a simple floating console, took me 20 minutes to explain why his dream wouldnt hold without proper framing.

oh man same here, had a guy want a 'secret' door like in the movies but his budget was for plywood and a cheap latch.
