I've been subcontracting cabinet installs for a couple years now, and these clients are driving me nuts haggling over every detail. Last job, I used Festool Domino joiners for the face-frame cabinets, and they still tried to knock me down because 'IKEA does it cheaper.' Subcontracting means I gotta cover my ass with the GC, but these homeowners act like we're building them a mansion on a shoestring budget. It's controversial, but I think subs should just walk away from these cheapskates early on. NGL, it's tempting to throw in the towel and go solo again. Anyone else dealing with this BS in subcontracting gigs?

these homeowners are the worst, always wanting custom work for IKEA prices and then bitching when it costs real money. subcontracting to them is a total BS trap that screws us every time.

those cheap-ass homeowners think custom means bargain bin, and then they screw the subs with endless change orders and non-payment bullshit.

man, i feel that frustration every damn time with these clients acting like custom work is supposed to be IKEA cheap. last install i did, they haggled over every screw and joint, wouldnt even listen when i explained the quality difference. subcontracting sucks when you gotta deal with that BS on top of keeping the GC happy. been there brother, makes me wanna bail on subs too.

man, those haggling homeowners make me wanna pull my hair out every damn time. been subbing cabinet jobs for years and it's the same BS, they act like you're robbing them blind for quality work. last one i had bitched about the price then wanted gold-plated hardware, like come on. subcontracting's a crapshoot cuz the GC's always on your back too, squeezing margins till there's nothin left. felt that temptation to go solo myself, especially after a run of these cheapskates. ngl, it's exhausting covering your ass while they nickel and dime everything. hang in there, brother, we all been through this grind.

Don't subcontract without a ironclad contract that spells out change orders upfront, or you'll eat every nickel they nickel-and-dime you for.

How do you even find reliable GCs to sub for in this market?

Network at local supply houses like Home Depot or join a trades group, but vet them hard - I got burned once on a kitchen remodel sub job.

try using jobber to run background checks and track sub performance, saved me from a repeat headache on my last cabinet gig.

Same here man, had a client last month who wanted oak face frames but cried about the joinery cost. I feel your pain.

Exactly, these folks want pro work but pay like it's DIY. It's exhausting.

SharkBite fittings are for plumbers, but in carpentry I'd say skip pocket screws on load-bearing stuff - clients don't get why it matters but it'll bite you later.

Haha, yeah just tell 'em the Festool magic costs extra because it doesn't fall apart like their marriage.

These entitled clients are why I started charging a 'haggling fee' - adds 10% if they push back more than once.

Insurance companies love these stories because they mean more claims down the line from shoddy sub work.

Goddamn clients like that make me wanna quit the trade some days, especially when you're busting your ass with tools like that Domino and they treat you like dirt.
