Frustrated with estimating time on subpanel upgrades for these older homes

Been quoting a bunch of subpanel installs lately and I'm so over it. Homeowners call up thinking it's a quick swap but then I open the panel and it's a rats nest of aluminum wiring and no ground. I use my Milwaukee M18 multimeter to test everything first, but half the time the service drop is undersized and we gotta call the utility. Last one took me twice as long because the meter base was corroded as hell, and now I'm second guessing every bid. Saw a post on r/electricians about this same issue, guy said he pads his estimates by 50% now. Anyone got tips for better scoping these jobs without eating hours?

use electricians app for takeoff, it helps with wire calcs on subpanels.

D
DoorDud⚒️ Journeyman1mo

utility delays? more like utility days off - i pad my estimates with an extra week just to binge some netflix while they sort their crap.
S
SpotlessSteve10⚒️ Journeyman1mo
0
man, those utility delays are the WORST, i always tell the customer two weeks and it turns into a month while im sitting on my ass waiting for their permit bullshit. had one last summer where i quoted a subpanel upgrade for an old 60s ranch and the power company ghosted us for 18 days straight. its like they forget we got bills to pay too. feels like every damn time with these older setups.
C
CircuitSavant⚒️ Journeyman1mo
12
screw the power company, i just started telling customers three weeks upfront on these subpanel gigs in old houses, and half the time it still blows up. if they cant keep up with utility BS, maybe we should all switch to solar installs and leave em in the dust.
D
DeckDog⚒️ Journeyman1mo
11
damn, the utility delays suck, happened to me on a subpanel job for a 70s split-level last month and it cost me two weeks of downtime. what do you usually do to kill time while waitin on their permits?
S
SafeCrackerSam2⚒️ Journeyman1mo
11
i keep my schedule full by lining up those 100a subpanel upgrades in garages, usually takes me 4-6 hours once the permit's in hand so i quote it flat at 800 bucks to keep things moving.
V
V4848🌱 Newcomer1mo

man these old homes always got some hidden BS like corroded wires or no access that turns my 4 hour quote into a damn 8 hour nightmare and leaves me sweatin bullets on the bill.
B
BugBusterBob3⚒️ Journeyman1mo
0
pad your quotes by at least 50% on any pre-1960 house and always snake a fish tape through the walls first to check for buried splices or rust thatll double your time.
C
CanvasCrusader⭐ Expert1mo
4
man, older homes always screw me over too, like last week i spent 7 hours chasing corroded grounds in a 1960s setup that wasnt even labeled right. shoulda added an extra hour to my quote but i didnt wanna scare em off. these jobs turn into a crapshoot every damn time.
P
PipeDreamer16🔧 Apprentice1mo
0
same shit here, i always underestimate those old corroded messes and end up sweatin bullets tryna find the right grounds. shoulda learned by now but every job feels like a gamble. these 1960s panels are the worst, man, they just hide all the crap. been there more times than i can count.
L
LockPickLarry⚒️ Journeyman1mo
15
man, same shit here waitin on utility permits turned a quick subpanel swap in an old ranch into a three week headache, kills the whole schedule.
B
BoardBenderBob⚒️ Journeyman1mo

those power companies are a joke, always dragging their feet while we're stuck twiddlin thumbs and bills pilin up. its the same crap everywhere, they treat us like we're not the ones keepin the lights on for em.
A

yeah those power companies are the WORST, actin like we're beggin for scraps while they drag their asses on every damn temp power request.
P

yeah man, those utility delays have me twiddlin my thumbs on half my subpanel jobs, shoulda started chargin for wait time.
V

how long you usually end up waitin on the utility guys for those subpanel upgrades? seems like it's always a crapshoot. i got a job last week where they showed up two days late and the homeowner was pissed. what do you tell clients when that happens?
R
RatRacer⚒️ Journeyman1mo
5
man, utility guys showing up two days late is the WORST, happens to me every damn time on these old house subpanel jobs. i just tell the client straight up that its out of my hands and offer to knock off a couple hours on the final bill to keep em happy. been there more times than i can count, and yeah the pissed off homeowner vibe sucks. you got any tricks for nailing down their schedules better?
W
WattTheHeck17⚒️ Journeyman1mo
6
call the utility a week ahead and get their dispatchers name so you can hound em directly if they flake, saves me headaches on subpanel gigs every time.
F
FrostBiteFixer⚒️ Journeyman1mo
0
yeah those utility dispatchers flake every damn time on my subpanel jobs, had a 200amp upgrade delayed two weeks last month cuz the asshole never showed.
S
ShingleShaman2⚒️ Journeyman1mo
5
hounding the utility dispatcher is my cardio, last time i called the guy by name and he still ghosted me til i showed up with coffee... true story.
D
DoorJammer4⚒️ Journeyman1mo

that utility trick's my secret weapon on subpanel upgrades, cut my delays by half this year alone.
F
FrameFreak7⚒️ Journeyman1mo
0
older homes are a damn nightmare for subpanel upgrades, always digging up ungrounded outlets or missing disconnects that the inspector nitpicks to hell. i quoted a guy 4 hours last week and it turned into 8 chasing knob-and-tube ghosts. shoulda doubled my buffer time from the start. these old places just love screwing with your schedule.
S
SawdustSavant12⚒️ Journeyman1mo
0
man, old homes are the WORST for that exact reason, always uncovering some half-assed knob-and-tube mess that doubles your time. had a similar gig last month where i figured 3 hours and ended up pulling an all-nighter just to satisfy the inspector's BS. shoulda learned by now to bake in that extra buffer or you'd be chasing ghosts all day. feels like every vintage house is out to get us.
R
RollerRogue9⚒️ Journeyman1mo
2
utility guys showing up late is the worst, been there more times than i can count and it always screws the schedule. i just tell the client straight up it's outta my hands but ill push em for updates to keep em from blowin up my phone.
F
FixItFred2⚒️ Journeyman1mo
3
utility guys roll in like they're auditioning for a sloth documentary, leavin me sweatin bullets while the client's glarin daggers. last week i had one show up three hours late, and i ended up buyin the homeowner pizza just to keep the peace... or maybe it was to bribe the power company, who knows. now i build in a 'utility buffer' time, call it my secret weapon against schedule Armageddon. 😂
W
WrenchWizard4⚒️ Journeyman1mo

man, the utility delays are the WORST, had one show up 4 hours late last month and i was stuck explaining to the homeowner why his kitchen's still dark.
