Newbie Mistake on Subpanel Job Cost Me $800 and a Headache

Man, I just wrapped up my first solo subpanel install up here in north jersey, and it was a total crap-show because I forgot to separate the neutral and ground bars properly. Used a Eaton BR series panel, thought I had it dialed in after watching that Electrician U video on YouTube, but the inspector failed it on the spot and made me redo the whole thing. Cost me an extra $800 in labor and materials to fix, not to mention the pissed-off customer waiting on power for his garage EV charger. Saw a similar rant on r/electricians last week about code violations biting new guys in the ass. Someone in the Electricians Network Facebook group mentioned checking NEC 408.40 twice over, wish I'd listened. Now I'm double-checking everything, but damn, lessons learned the hard way. Anyone else got a story like this from their apprentice days?

Inspectors in jersey are the worst, always nitpicking every little wire nut.

Those Eaton panels are finicky with the bar setups, but yeah, neutral-ground separation is non-negotiable.

Had a buddy get zapped on a job ignoring that rule, lesson stuck.

Homeowners calling in DIY disasters, then we clean up the code mess for peanuts.

Proud of you for owning it though, most newbies blame the inspector.

What size feeder did you run? Might be the real issue.

Never separate grounds without a bonding screw, or you'll regret it big time.

Grab a Square D QO next time, way more forgiving on installs.

And the overtime pay? Non-existent when it's your screw-up.

NEC 250.24 is clear, but try telling a rushed apprentice that.

$800? Try $2k when you factor in the callback truck.

SharkBite for plumbing, but for panels? Stick to basics, no shortcuts.
