Been in the Chicago area my whole career, and last week I was troubleshooting a 240V circuit in an old basement panel that hadn't been touched since the 80s. Guy had a homemade extension from 10/2 romex jury-rigged to a dryer outlet, no GFCI anywhere, and I pop the cover without double-checking the main. Sparks fly, I'm inches from a shock that would've lit me up like a Christmas tree. Newbies, always verify with a non-contact tester like the Fluke 1AC before touching anything, even if the breaker is off. Saw a similar story on r/electricians about a guy who skipped that step and ended up in the ER. And yeah, someone in Electricians Network group mentioned the same crap with vintage houses here. Don't be that idiot.
