Out here in north jersey, zone 5 winters mean folks want their electrical rock solid, so I quoted this guy $4500 to install a 200A Square D subpanel in his detached garage last week. He starts lowballing me, saying he saw some DIY video and could do it for half, but I walked him through the NEC code 210.8 requirements for GFCI protection and how a botched install could fry his whole setup during a snowstorm. Took the time to show him the rust on his old setup from the damp basement, and boom, he signed off without another word. Proud moment, especially after seeing all the nightmare stories on r/electricians about cheapskates causing fires. Guy in Electricians Network FB group mentioned something similar with a client who backed out, but mine stuck. Finally feels good to stand firm on the value.

Man, that north jersey cold makes every job twice as miserable, glad you held the line.

Yeah, had a similar hageler last month who thought $2k covered a full rewire. Nope.

Break it down with codes and risks, works every time on the smart ones.

demo always shuts down the cheapskates, especially when you point out nec 110.3(b) for proper labeling to avoid code violations. had a guy back off haggling quick after i showed him the fire risk from overloaded circuits without that subpanel. throw in a quick calc of his current draw at 180 amps and they see the $2500 upgrade is a steal. keeps your liability low too.

Tell me about it, the whole industry's getting flooded with cheap DIY disasters we have to fix later.

How'd you handle the demo part without scaring him off completely?

Solid win, what's your go-to for quoting subpanels in older homes like that?
