QuickBooks for electrical jobs: worth the hassle or just DIY spreadsheets?

Been in the Chicago area my whole career wiring up old houses and commercial panels, and TBH I'm done with this bookkeeping BS. I got QuickBooks Online for tracking my material costs on those 200A service upgrades, but it's a pain entering every damn romex roll and breaker from Ferguson. Saw a rant in the Electricians Network Facebook group where guys swear by it for tax time, but IMHO spreadsheets in Excel do the job without the monthly fee eating into my profits. Someone in r/electricians mentioned using it to separate my labor on EV charger installs from the parts markup. Watched a Dustin Stelzer video on Electrician U about organizing finances, and now I'm second-guessing everything. Defintely overrated for solo sparky like me. Who's ditching software for pen and paper?

Stick with QuickBooks, it auto-categorizes your receipts for those panel upgrades way better than spreadsheets.

NGL, the integration with my bank saved me hours on reconciling Square payments from service calls.

Yeah, but watch the subscription creep, it adds up after the first year.

True, I negotiated a discount by calling support, now it's half price for my small outfit.

Same here, spreadsheets turned into a nightmare when I missed a deduction on my 1099s last year.

Felt that, audited because of my sloppy tracking on wire runs.

I hit 150k last year tracking every job in QB, made filing taxes a breeze.

Proud of that number? Bet it was all from those fat commercial rewire gigs.

Frustrated as hell with QuickBooks freezing during peak season invoicing.

Same crap, lost a whole afternoon of entries on a subpanel job.

Don't rely on it for permits, still gotta double-check NEC codes manually.

Funny how it flags 'electrical' expenses but chokes on custom GFCI installs.

Those PE roll-ups are snapping up shops with clean books, don't get left behind.

SharkBite for plumbing yeah, but for books? QB or bust, fight me.

Me and the boys switched to spreadsheets, no more cloud BS slowing us down.

Solid move, we cut costs and still passed our audit no problem.

Warning: sloppy books got my buddy sued over a mischarged breaker panel.

Spreadsheets are fine until you scale, then you're screwed without software.

Controversial take: DIY books are for amateurs, real pros use QB Pro.

I'm in the same boat, QB helps but the learning curve pissed me off.

Homeowners with their ChatGPT quotes are bad enough, don't add book errors.

Humor me, but my Excel hack with macros tracks DFU loads better than QB ever did.

Echo that frustration, been chasing a duplicate entry for days on a 240V run.

Switch to FreshBooks if QB sucks, lighter for service work.

Bold opinion: forget software, hire a CPA for under $500 a month.
