That Time I Almost Fried Myself on a Live Panel in the Rain

Man, we're in the Pacific Northwest so yeah the rain is real, and it was pouring cats and dogs last week when I got called to troubleshoot a flickering 240V circuit in this old barn conversion. I'm feeding the main panel with some 6/3 NM cable, everything labeled per NEC 408.4, but the damn GFCI wouldn't trip because the ground was bonded wrong from the last hack job. Heart was pounding when I realized the neutral was hot and I had my Klein multitool on it, could've been lights out for me right there. Felt like one of those near-miss stories you hear on r/electricians, where guys dodge a bullet by sheer luck. Swear, after that I double-checked every lug with my Fluke 117 before touching anything else. Anyone else had a close call like that? Makes you appreciate lockout/tagout even more.

Always test for voltage with a non-contact first, saved my ass on a similar rainy job with wet romex.

Grab a pair of energized work gloves rated for 1kV, they're pricey but worth it for outdoor sparks.

NEC 110.11 says de-energize before work, but yeah, rain makes everything a crapshoot. Check that D ring bond next time.

Homeowners think they can flip breakers themselves, then blame us when it's live. Inspectors should require better labels.

I feel you, brother. Almost zapped myself last month pulling a meter base in the drizzle, hands shaking after.

Haha, picture this: me, soaked to the bone, slipping on the ladder with live wires dangling. Cat thought it was playtime.

FML, had a foreman rush me on a tight deadline and I skipped the full LOTO, sparks flew and I smelled burnt hair.

These DIY videos on YouTube got people messing with panels all wrong, then we clean up the near-disasters.

Same here in the wet season, but I use a hot stick now, no more close calls with my Milwaukee tester.

Proud to say I've gone 5 years without a shock, thanks to daily PPE checks and a good tick tester routine.

Verify all hots with your meter, even if it 'looks' off. Fluke never lies.

Bonding jumps are killer in old setups, add a surge protector at the panel for extra insurance.

Invest in a quality rain jacket with hood, keeps your tools dry and your head clear.

Use a solenoid tester for quick checks, faster than multimeter in wet conditions.
