I'm just starting out in flooring installs and quoted a job with Mohawk SolidTech at $4.50 per sq ft installed, but the homeowner balked hard. Is that too high for basic luxury vinyl? Any tips for a vet like me breaking into this without getting hosed on margins.

hey op, where exactly did you get that $4.50 quote from, was it lowes or some supplier?

lowes is jacking up prices on mohawk plank to $4.50 just to screw over us installers while they undercut everyone else. its all the same BS from these big box thieves.

homeowners these days think theyre gonna get mohawk solidtech for $2 a sq ft cuz they saw it on some bargain site, its BS and they never appreciate the install work anyway.

man, i hear ya, homeowners always balk at $4.50 for solidtech like its gold-plated, been there on my first few jobs and it stings.

4.50 is gonna get you laughed out the door in this market, dont even think about dropping below 5.50 or you'll be workin for peanuts after material costs eat half your margin. i saw a buddy go under last year quotin mohawk at 4.20 just to win the job, and the homeowner still stiffed him on the final payment after nitpickin every plank. stick to flat rate sheets with clear add-ons for subfloor prep, or you'll get hosed every time. cheap vinyl like that always brings the bargain hunters who ghost you mid-project. watch out for those big box stores undercuttin everyone too, they flood the market with knockoffs. keep your quotes firm and walk away from the lowballers, trust me.

man, $4.50's right in the wheelhouse for solidtech but homeowners always think it's too steep till they see the cheap crap delaminate in a year, been burned on that lowball bs myself.

homeowners always balk at $4.50 for solidtech like they're getting ripped off, but screw that, they're the ones googling cheap big box crap and expecting pro work for free.

$4.50 is a steal for solidtech installs, if they're balking that hard they're just cheapskates hunting for diy deals and you'll end up with callbacks from their half-assed expectations.

Homeowners always think flooring should cost what they see at big box stores. Screw that, they don't factor in the labor or waste.

Exactly, and then they complain about bubbles or seams later.

Those cheapskates will nickel and dime you until the install looks like crap. Stand firm or you'll be back fixing it for free.

Yep, lost a whole weekend redoing a job last year because I caved on price.

Try quoting with options: basic at $4/sq ft, premium with underlayment at $5.50. Mohawk holds up great, worth the upcharge.

$4.50 sounds about right, but tell 'em it's Mohawk quality or they can DIY with Home Depot crap and regret it.

Haha, just nod and smile while they haggle, then add a 'complexity fee' for their headache.
