So I'm out here in rural Ohio laying down some Coretec LVP in this 70s ranch house, and everything's going smooth until I pop up a section of the old particleboard subfloor. Damn near cut right into a live 120V line snaking through without any marking - heart stopped for a sec. Been doing flooring installs for 8 years and I've seen sketchy stuff, but this was too close. Makes me double-check every job now, especially in these older homes with zero updates. Anyone else had a close call like that with hidden wiring? I charged the client an extra $400 to reroute it proper before finishing the install.
always run a stud finder with voltage detection before ripping up any subfloor, saved my ass on a similar job last month. if it's an older place like that, test every joist space too, better safe than zapped.

those old houses are a goddamn minefield, every other job i hit some half-assed wiring job from the 70s that shoulda been ripped out years ago by lazy homeowners.

those old ranch homes are a damn minefield with unlicensed hacks running romex like its spaghetti under particleboard, no wonder we keep dodging lawsuits. pisses me off every time i gotta charge extra just to fix their bs.

always hit the subfloor with a stud finder that has ac detection before cutting, saved my ass on a similar job in an old farmhouse last month.

always run a stud finder with voltage detection like the milwaukee one before cutting into any old subfloor, saved my ass on a similar job last month.

these old ranch houses are death traps with that unpermitted crap run by some hack in the 70s, pisses me off every time i gotta play electrician just to not fry myself or the client.

stud finder aint gonna cut it on these old particleboard subs, always scan with a multimeter set to AC voltage before you cut anything. i saw a guy in a 60s split level last year who drilled right through a 240V romex and ended up with a hospital bill over 5k, nearly fried himself. dont skip the reroute like you did, but damn good call charging that extra 400 to fix it proper. these ranch houses are full of lazy diy hacks from the 70s hiding wires like that, and itll bite you if youre not paranoid about it. get a non-contact voltage tester in your kit if you havent already, saved my ass more times than i can count.

Always scan with a Bosch multi-detector before cutting - saved me from a similar mess last month on a tile job.

Frustrating as hell when homeowners think their 40-year-old wiring is 'fine' - had to walk off a job over it last week. These rural spots are full of crap like that.

Tell me about it, one wrong slice and you're looking at a $5k electrical nightmare on top of your flooring bill. Shoulda just upcharged 'em for the inspection upfront.

Yeah, that particleboard hiding wires is a total crapshoot - better to assume it's booby-trapped.

LOL, I once mistook a phone line for a data cable and yanked it out - client was pissed but it turned out to be their landline from the 90s. Crisis averted with a quick splice.
