Been in the Chicago area my whole career doing mostly residential flooring installs, and hiring good help is getting tougher every year. Last month I brought on this guy thinking he had some experience with luxury vinyl plank, but he kept messing up the tongue-and-groove alignments on Coretec jobs, wasting half a day recutting boards. I tried coaching him through a couple installs, even showed him how to use the 45-degree miter for transitions, but it was clear he wasn't picking it up fast enough for the pace we need. Finally had to let him go after he botched a whole room layout, which pushed us behind on a three-day kitchen refloor. Now I'm back to solo work until I find someone reliable, maybe post in some local groups for leads. Anyone got tips on spotting the right apprentice during interviews? Firing sucks but quality work pays the bills.

honestly, if he cant nail coretecs click-lock after a week, hes better off flipping burgers than flooring, saves you the headache of half-assed work screwing your rep.

dont hire anyone who cant demo a full room in under an hour on interview day, i ignored that once and spent a week fixing his screwups on lvp clicks, nearly lost the client.

goddamn, these so-called experienced helpers are the WORST, showing up thinking they can click LVP but end up wasting your materials and time like it's their first rodeo. the whole industry's flooded with posers who can't even align a tongue right, pisses me off every time i have to fire one.
