Out here in north jersey, winters eat through everything, and I nearly had a crap-show on my hands last week installing a replacement torsion spring on a customer's Liftmaster opener. The homeowner was all 'just fix it quick, I got places to be,' but I spotted the old spring was way out of balance and could've snapped mid-wind, sending the whole damn door flying. TBH, these DIY types watch one YouTube video and think they're pros, but I charged her $350 to do it right with a Dura-Lift spring and proper cable tension, no shortcuts. Saw a similar near-miss rant in the Garage Door Installers Facebook group yesterday, makes you wonder how many close calls we dodge daily. Guy in there said he walked away from a $2000 job because the client insisted on using some no-name Amazon parts. Me? I ain't risking my ass or my liability for that BS. Lesson learned: always inspect the full setup, even if they're pushing for cheap. Edit: she called back thanking me, door runs smooth now.

god, these clients always think springs are like changing a tire, one wrong twist and you're in the ER.

yep, had a guy last month blame me when his 'budget' spring popped after 3 days.

frustrating as hell, especially when they call back yelling about the bill.

north jersey jobs are the worst for this, too many rushed installs before the snow hits.

hahah, remind me of the time I told a guy 'sure, you replace it' and he called me crying after 10 minutes.

15 years in, and finally got to the point where I turn down the sketchy ones. Feels good.

feels like every other job, clients don't get the danger till it's almost too late.

always use a torque wrench for the wind-up, saved my hide more than once on liftmaster jobs.

hit my 10 year mark last month, now I charge extra for inspections to weed out the cheapos.

frustrated doesn't cover it, one bad spring and you're looking at $5k in damages easy.

proud moment when you educate them and they actually listen, rare but happens.

for safety reverses, check the photo eyes first, misalignment causes 80% of issues.

PE firms buying up garage door shops now, turning everything into a race for volume over safety.

yeah, insurance rates through the roof because of these corner-cutting roll-ups.
