Started my home remodeling side hustle about a year and a half ago, and it's picking up steam, but damn, I can't keep good help to save my life. We handle everything from bathroom overhauls with Delta faucets to patching drywall and slapping on some Benjamin Moore paint, plus the odd handyman fix. I've brought on a few guys, start 'em with cash daily, but they flake or show up half-assed. Met one at a jobsite this morning for a quick chat about skills, and poof, gone by noon. It's killing my growth, feels like I'm stuck solo forever. Saw a similar rant in the Contractors Network Facebook group last week, bunch of guys saying the same. Anyone got tips on sourcing better talent without the BS?

Haha, sounds like my last hire who brought a 'toolbox' that was just a plastic bag with a hammer. Welcome to the circus, brother.

Non refundable deposit on day one weeds out the flakes fast. And yeah, that plastic bag story is too real.

Deposits are key, but even then, some clowns think it's optional. Insurance nightmare waiting to happen.

These no-shows are the industry's cancer, man. Every time I post on Craigslist, it's a parade of ghosts.

Same here, Craigslist is a dumpster fire for hiring. Wastes everyone's time.

Finally built a solid crew of 4 after years of turnover. Started with referrals from my network, now we run like clockwork on remodel jobs.

Screen with a skills test on site before hiring. For painters, have 'em match a color swatch with a roller on scrap drywall.

Post in trade-specific Facebook groups too, like Handyman Nation. Vets the applicants better than random ads, and always do a trial day with clear expectations.
