I've been running a referral program for my general handyman services here in the greater Atlanta area for about two years now, offering $50 off the next job for every successful referral, but the past six months it's dried up like the Sahara. Customers promise they'll send their buddies my way after I fix their leaky faucets or hang those IKEA shelves, but nada. We're in Georgia here, and word of mouth used to be gold with all the subdivisions popping up, but now everyone's ghosting me on follow-throughs. I even tried sweetening it to a free tune-up on lawn mowers, thinking it'd hook the yard work crowd, but still crickets. Saw a thread on r/smallbusiness where guys were complaining about the same thing, and someone in the Handyman Nation Facebook group suggested it's because everyone's on Nextdoor now instead of chatting at barbecues. Frustrated as hell, feels like I'm throwing money at shadows.

i ditched referrals for google business profile posts showing my clean finishes on those atlanta deck builds and now im booked solid through next summer, pulling in $80k just from organic searches.

hell yeah, my referrals dried up faster than a bad spray tan, but now google's got me booked like i'm the atlanta deck whisperer.

those damn referral programs are a total scam cooked up by angi and thumbtack to keep us chasing ghosts while they pocket the leads.

man, referrals dried up for me too after the last recession hit. now everyone's too busy scrolling angi or whatever to bother spreading the word. sucks when you bend over backwards for a solid job and get crickets in return.

goddamn nextdoor and angi are killing word of mouth, turning everyone into cheapskate ghosts who wont refer for shit anymore. feels like were all just feeding the lead-gen vampires now.

man same shit here in atlanta, folks swear they'll refer me then vanish like ghosts after i fix their crap.

yeah, i offer 'em a free beer for every referral and still get crickets... must be the paint splatters on my business cards scaring 'em off. had one guy swear he'd send his whole cul-de-sac my way after i patched his popcorn ceiling, then poof, gone faster than my lunch in the truck. atlanta ghosts are real, man. 😂

dont pour more cash into those referrals, had a buddy in atlanta chase 'em for months and ended up stiffed on half his jobs, stick to nextdoor posts instead.

nextdoor's hit or miss but i started posting before/after pics of jobs with a quick call number and now i'm booking 2-3 gigs a week steady.

referral programs are a scam cooked up by angi and thumbtack to bleed us dry with their fees, pics on nextdoor work way better if you tag the neighborhood right. screw the middlemen, go direct or go home.
E

screw nextdoor too, half the leads are cheap bastards haggling over $50 fixes while im tryin to run a real business, referrals are dead but yard signs still pull in the good ones every damn time.

man, same crap here in the atlanta burbs. been chasing referrals for years with my $40 visa gift card gimmick, but folks just pocket the deal and forget i exist. it's like they think their buddies will magically find me without a nudge on nextdoor or whatever app they're glued to. pissed off wasting time on this bs when i could be out bidding jobs instead.

post a before and after pic of your last door frame fix on nextdoor with a line like 'saved this old house from fallin apart, hit me up if you need the same' and tag it under handyman services to get those referrals rollin again.

S

ditch the referral discount and try nextdoor ads targeted to atlanta suburbs, i got 15 solid handyman leads last month for just $200 spend.
W
WeedWarrior⚒️ Journeyman1mo

ditch the referral incentives and focus on nextdoor posts instead - i've picked up three steady clients this month just by listing my handyman rates there with before/after pics of leaky faucet fixes. georgia folks are scrolling that app nonstop, way more than old-school word of mouth.

referrals now? it's like offering free beer at a dry county fair... nobody shows up but the cops with questions. i tried slapping a 'tell your neighbor' sticker on every invoice last year, ended up with more calls about my ugly logo than actual jobs. 😂 shoulda stuck to cold beers after work instead. same boat, man, gigs drier than my ex's humor.

switch to nextdoor posts with before/after pics of your last jobs, i get 2-3 solid referrals a month that way now.
P
PestPatrolPete⚒️ Journeyman1mo
0
nextdoor's been hit or miss for me too, especially with all the fake reviews popping up. i've tried posting those before/after pics like you said, but only snag one decent lead every couple months. what kinda jobs are you showing in your pics to hook the good ones? like deck repairs or kitchen fixes? also, you sticking to free posts or paying for the promoted ones? i heard that boosts visibility but eats into the budget quick. been thinking of switching to thumbtack but not sure if it's worth the hassle.
S
SparkPlugFail⚒️ Journeyman1mo
0
try hittin up nextdoor instead, its free and locals actually post their handyman needs there without the lead gen BS. i switched over last year and picked up three steady gigs from neighborhood folks lookin for deck repairs and shit like that. set up a simple profile with pics of your work, like that milwaukee tool setup on a recent job, and respond quick to posts. throw in a small incentive, say 10% off for referrals from their buddies, but keep it casual so it doesnt feel salesy. works better than those big referral programs that just eat your time with crap leads. been pullin in consistent work since, worth the switch imo.

try switching to nextdoor ads instead, targeted them at my local zip codes and pulled in three solid handyman jobs last month alone. set your budget to $50 a week and focus on keywords like 'deck repair' or 'drywall patch' that folks actually search. it's not as passive as referrals but way more reliable these days. i've seen guys double their leads by mixing in some yard signs too, costs about 20 bucks each from home depot.

try droppin a $50 home depot gift card for every solid referral that books, my buddy swears it tripled his handyman jobs without the thumbtack hassle.

try tacking on a $50 gift card incentive for every referral that books a job, it doubled mine last year.

try followin up with a text three days after the job, remind 'em of the $50 gift card for referrin a neighbor, works way better than waitin for them to remember.

yeah, facebook groups are where the real action's at, just don't post a pic of your clogged drain selfies or you'll get banned faster than a sharkbite in a pressure test 😂

posting those drain selfies in facebook groups will get you banned quick, dont risk your account over some dumb pics.

goddamn facebook groups are a total scam for leads now, they ban you for nothing while the real handyman work gets buried under all the bs posts from posers.

referrals are a scam for us little guys now, pe firms pay their own crews to fake em and flood the market. spent $2k last year on gift cards for buddies and got three crappy jobs that barely covered gas. those assholes with their branded vans swoop in on every lead from angi or nextdoor before you even hear about it. screw relying on word of mouth, start bidding on government contracts or something that doesnt let the big boys dominate. i tried door knocking in neighborhoods after bad storms and pulled in $5k in a week, way better than waiting for some half ass referral. fight me if you think the old ways still work in this crap economy.
