Insurance companies screwing over small general contractors with bookkeeping BS

Man, these insurance underwriters are killing me with their demands for perfect bookkeeping records just to renew my GL policy. I run a small general contracting outfit doing mostly kitchen remodels and deck builds, and half the time I'm chasing receipts for materials like Trex decking or Bosch tools instead of actually working jobs. Been in the Chicago area my whole career, and it seems like every year they want more audits and detailed ledgers from QuickBooks, but I'm not a damn accountant. TBH, it's making me question if it's worth the hassle when premiums are already through the roof. Saw a rant in Contractors Network on Facebook about this same crap, and yeah, we're all getting bent over. FML, anyone else dealing with this nonsense?

Scaled my general ops to three crews last year and ditched the headaches by outsourcing bookkeeping to a service that handles insurance compliance.

Same here, hit 250k revenue without the daily grind of tracking every nail.

Proud of finally getting my books tight enough for that commercial policy upgrade, now I can bid on bigger remodels without sweating the audits.

Hah, my last audit found a $50 coffee receipt miscategorized as supplies, underwriter laughed but still hiked my rate.

SharkBite fittings are trash for anything structural, stick to proper framing or your whole build's a liability nightmare.

How do you guys format your QuickBooks exports for the insurance folks? Mine keeps rejecting the PDFs.

I feel you on the receipt chasing, it's like they think we're running a Fortune 500 instead of banging out basements.

Exactly, spent a whole Saturday sorting Kohler invoices just to prove I didn't overbuy vanities.

Nailed a $150k remodel contract last month after cleaning up my books, insurance approved without a peep.

Outsourcing is a scam, they charge more than the policy savings and still mess up your categories.

Disagree, saved me 20 hours a month on DeWalt tool depreciation tracking alone.

Yeah but their fees ate half my margin on that sunroom add-on.

Switch to Xero for bookkeeping, integrates seamlessly with insurance portals and cuts the audit time in half.

Tried that, way better for tracking subcontract labor on my patio jobs.

Frustrated as hell, my carrier dropped me last quarter over 'incomplete records' after I missed one Home Depot run.

What'd you do to fight it? I had a similar issue with a missed permit log.

Use Jobber for everything, auto-syncs receipts to QuickBooks and flags insurance-required categories upfront.

Hired a part-time bookkeeper for $25/hr, best move for keeping my general liability clean.

Lol, my underwriter asked for a breakdown of every Benjamin Moore paint can I bought last year.

Pro tip: scan everything with an app like Expensify before the year ends, saved my ass on a deck rebuild claim.
