Out here in the Chicago area, I'm running a small general handyman outfit and just got quoted $2500 a year for some scheduling software that promises to 'optimize my routes' with basic stuff like invoicing and client texts. It's got me pissed because I can barely keep up with the winter slowdown on repairs and installs, and now this expense? Anyone else dealing with this crap from these overpriced apps?

Don't sign up for that junk, it'll lock you into a contract and eat your margins before you even route one job.

Yeah, stick to free trials or just use Google Calendar until you scale up.

Try Jobber instead, it's way cheaper at around $50/month and handles handyman scheduling without the bloat.

Jobber saved my ass on multi-day install jobs, easy to tag tools and materials.

Same here, these software companies target us small general ops like vultures.

Feels like they're pricing us out before we even get the work.

I feel your pain, man. Winter in Chicago hits general repairs hard, and extra costs just pile on.

Switch to something open-source like Google Sheets hacks for routing, saved me hundreds.

Yep, pair it with free route planners and you're golden for handyman gigs.

Route4Me add-on for your phone app works great for on-the-fly scheduling in mixed jobs.

FieldEdge is another one, but yeah, the yearly fees are a ripoff for solo handymen.

Overpriced as hell, especially when most general work is word-of-mouth anyway.

Exactly, why pay for features you won't use on basic fix-ups.

I ditched it after one month, went back to paper logs and never looked back.

OptimoRoute is decent if you do a lot of driving for installs, but test the free version first.

ServiceTitan is the worst offender, charging premiums for basic scheduling that any app can do.

Totally, it's like they're conspiring to squeeze every last dime from us general contractors.

These platforms treat us like big firms, not the small handyman battling Chicago traffic.

ditch the big platforms and try housecall pro, it's only about 50 bucks a month for solo guys like us. saves me hours on chicago routes every week.

I'm with you, the rage is real when margins are already thin on repair calls.

Hit $120k last year without fancy software, just good old planning boards.
