I'm in rural Ohio doing mostly handyman stuff like deck repairs and drywall patches, and these permit fees are screwing me on every job over $500. Just got hit with a $250 fee for a simple porch rebuild that I quoted the client $1800 for, and now they're pissed because it bumps the total. How the hell are you all navigating this BS without losing clients?

hell, i just started tellin' clients the county wants their cut before i even swing a hammer, turns the permit fee into a team-building exercise with the township vampires 😂

these rural ohio inspectors are straight up bandits with those fees, hittin us small guys on every damn repair while the big contractors skate by without a peep.

man, same BS here in rural ohio, just ate a $200 permit hit on a $1200 deck fix and the client ghosted me after i explained it.

man, those permit fees are a total BS tax on us little guys, just ate $200 on a shed repair last month and the client nearly bailed. feels like every county's out to squeeze every last dollar. been there with the pissed off homeowners, have to eat the cost half the time to keep the job. same crap everywhere in rural areas, huh?

bake the permit fee into your quote upfront as a line item so clients see it coming and don't blame you for the bump.

man, those permit fees are a total ripoff, especially out in the sticks where the jobs are small but the paperwork's the same as in the city. i had a similar crap job last month, quoting $1200 for a fence fix and then bam, $200 permit hits and the customer's looking at me like i invented taxes. been there brother, it sucks when you're just trying to keep the lights on and the county's squeezing every dime. clients get pissed and i end up eating half the fee to keep 'em happy, but it adds up quick. same shit here in rural spots, no breaks for us little guys. you'd think they'd cut some slack for under $1000 jobs, but nope. makes me wanna go rogue on the small stuff, but that'd bite me in the ass eventually. hang in there, it's frustrating as hell.

skip the permit on that porch job and you'll end up with fines way bigger than $250 or the building dept shutting you down for good.

you folding the permit fee into your quote upfront or just eating it to keep the client happy?

those rural counties are straight-up robbing us blind with these fees just to line their pockets while we bust our asses on jobs that barely break even.

man i feel that, rural areas like ours hit you with these crazy fees and half the time clients just ghost you when the bill climbs.

man, these permit fees in rural areas are straight up robbery, ate into my margins on a $1200 shed repair last month and the client ghosted me after. counties act like they're funding the whole damn infrastructure with our cash. im about ready to start quoting them separately just to make the point, screw hiding it anymore.

hell, in rural ohio i just tell em the permit fee's for 'bribing the inspector with donuts' and they laugh it off... until the bill hits.

build the permit fee into your quote upfront as a line item so clients see it coming and dont get pissed at the end.

those damn county inspectors are the real crooks out here, jacking up fees like they're funding a private jet. i had a similar crap-show last month on a shed rebuild, quoted $1200 and bam, $200 permit slaps on top, client acts like i invented the tax code. it's all BS, these rural boards treat us like we're dodging taxes on every nail. we should all just start a petition or something to cap these fees at 5% of the job, enough is enough. clients don't get that it's not our call, but yeah, they're the ones walking away pissed. screw the system, man, it's killing the little guy.

Exactly, and then the inspectors show up late anyway.

Screw the permits for small stuff, I've skipped 'em on fences under 6ft and never had issues. Fight me if you want, but it's how I stay profitable.

This is why I bake a 15% buffer into every quote for bullshit like permits and inspections. Rural Ohio's no different, everyone's getting gouged by county clerks.

Smart move. I've been doing that for years now.

man, those rural ohio fees are killing us small guys, cant even fix a leaky faucet without forking over 200 bucks for a stupid permit. been there too many times, feels like the county just wants a cut of every job we do. last month i had to eat the cost on a simple deck repair cause the homeowner bailed when i mentioned it. its bullshit how they jack up prices every year while we barely break even. same shit here, gotta find ways to dodge em without getting caught.

yeah man, those county clerks out here in rural areas are straight up robbing us blind with their permit fees, i gotta bake in at least 20% just to break even.

Just pulled off a $120k year subcontracting handyman gigs in Ohio, and yeah, permits were a pain but I raised my rates 20% to cover it. Clients pay or they don't, simple as that.
