Walked into this old ranch in the Phoenix area for what was supposed to be a quick shelf install, but the homeowner shows me his DIY TV mount using zip ties and a repurposed coat hanger. Guy swears it's held his 55-inch Samsung for two years without a hitch, but when I give it a nudge, the whole thing sways like a drunk at last call. I bit my tongue and charged him $150 to redo it properly with a Sanus full-motion bracket, but damn, I've seen some wild ones. Saw a similar story on r/handyman last week about a guy using duct tape for cabinets. Someone in Handyman Nation group asked if these hacks ever actually work long-term, and the consensus was hell no. Tommy Mello talks about spotting these red flags in client homes to upsell safer fixes. IMO, laughing it off and educating them is the way, but yeah, fight me if you think zip ties are structural.
