Walked into this old ranch in the Phoenix area for what was supposed to be a quick shelf install, but the homeowner shows me his DIY TV mount using zip ties and a repurposed coat hanger. Guy swears it's held his 55-inch Samsung for two years without a hitch, but when I give it a nudge, the whole thing sways like a drunk at last call. I bit my tongue and charged him $150 to redo it properly with a Sanus full-motion bracket, but damn, I've seen some wild ones. Saw a similar story on r/handyman last week about a guy using duct tape for cabinets. Someone in Handyman Nation group asked if these hacks ever actually work long-term, and the consensus was hell no. Tommy Mello talks about spotting these red flags in client homes to upsell safer fixes. IMO, laughing it off and educating them is the way, but yeah, fight me if you think zip ties are structural.
man, that sways like a drunk? i feel that in my back from all the fixes i've done.

command hooks are a recipe for disaster on anything over 20 pounds, so i always start by checking the wall type and grabbing my stud finder first thing. last time i saw one like that, the tv had yanked half the paint off the drywall when it came down. use toggle bolts or lag screws into studs for a 65-incher, saves you from emergency calls like that. ive mounted hundreds without a hitch by pre-drilling and using sanus brackets, they hold like a champ. stick to that and your customers wont be calling you back in tears lol.

nah, let em figure out their own crap with those diy hacks, saves me the hassle of fixing it later. sanus kits are overrated anyway, ive done plenty with basic toggle bolts and never had one fail.

hey whats the dumbest diy tv hack youve had to fix so far? mine was this guy who used command strips on a 55 incher, it crashed down in a week. sanus kits aint perfect but they beat that crap every time. you ever just laugh and take pics before pulling it off?

man i feel that in my bones every damn time i walk into a hack job like that. had a customer last week who thought pvc pipe was perfect for his shower drain, didnt even glue the joints right, water everywhere and hes like 'whats the big deal?' we apprentices get all the fun ones, dont we? reminds me of this one time the boss made me fix a buddies wiring mess with romex runnin through the attic without clips, total nightmare. customers think theyre geniuses with their youtube hacks but its always us cleanin up the mess. been there way too many times already and im only a year in. makes you wonder how these houses dont burn down more often. same shit here, bro, keep laughin it off or youll go nuts.

next time you see a hack like that, snap a pic and use the ridgid seesnake to show em the real mess inside without tearin walls apart. saves you time and they actually get why its a problem.

how do you usually explain to homeowners why the seesnake footage means they gotta redo the whole mount instead of just patching it?

goddamn homeowners and their 'genius' hacks ALWAYS turn a quick patch job into a full demo nightmare, and then they bitch about the bill like we caused it.

customer had zip-tied their 55-inch tv to a coat rack with bungee cords, thought it'd hold the weight fine. grab a sanus vmpl50 mount next time, it's sturdy and installs in under 30 minutes.

next time you see one of those hack jobs, just snap a quick pic before fixin it and show em how it's done with a proper sanus mount or somethin sturdy like that. saves you explainin and they might even learn a thing or two. i always carry a few toggle bolts in my kit for those drywall disasters, works wonders. keeps the laughs to a minimum and the job smooth.

nah, i aint snappin pics or lecturin these clowns about sanus mounts, let em learn the hard way when their 65" tv crashes down and cracks the floor. toggle bolts are fine for pros but homeowners think zip ties and duct tape make em engineers, total BS. i've seen more drywall craters from these 'hacks' than proper installs, and it pisses me off every time. fight me if you think educatin em saves hassle, just bill em double for the cleanup.

had a lady once who duct-taped her 55-inch tv to a particle board shelf she called a 'floating mount' - i laughed so hard i almost dropped my milwaukee drill. fired up the seesnake and showed her the wires tangled like christmas lights in hell behind there, she went white as a ghost. now shes paying me 300 bucks to fix it proper with sanus brackets and in-wall cable kit. best part? she tipped me extra for not makin fun of her too much out loud. 😂 still cracks me up thinkin about it.

tell 'em to use toggle bolts on drywall for anything over 50lbs, beats zip ties every time. had to reinforce one of those messes last week with sanus mounts to keep it from crashing down.

toggle bolts are overkill for anything under 80lbs, sanus mounts are just a fancy way to charge more for basic lag screws imo.

those sharkbite hacks on gas lines are straight up DUMB, i wouldnt touch em with a ten foot pole even if the customer begs. seen one blow up in a buddies face last year, nearly torched the whole kitchen. homeowners think theyre geniuses till the bill hits five figures for the real fix.

tell em to use toggle bolts in drywall or a sanus full-motion mount rated for 75 inches, saves you the headache of fixin a crash later. seen too many of those hacks end up with the tv on the floor and a pissed customer.

man, i just had a similar call last week where the homeowner thought wrapping extension cords around the tv mount was 'ingenious' for hiding wires, but it was a total fire waiting to happen. one wrong move and boom, whole wall's toast. these diy hacks from tiktok are killing me, folks watching one video and thinking theyre pros. i spent an extra hour ripping it all down and running proper 14/2 romex behind the drywall to do it right. customers look at you like youre overcharging when you fix their mess, but id rather bill the time than show up to a house fire. shoulda charged double for the headache. been in this game 8 years and the dumb ideas just keep coming. whats the worst hack youve seen?
