I'm offering $50 referral bonuses for anyone who sends me a handyman gig like fixing leaky faucets or hanging shelves, but folks in the Dallas-Fort Worth area keep claiming it without actually bringing in clients. Last month I paid out $200 to some guy who just mentioned my name, and the job fell through. This is BS, how do you structure yours to avoid getting burned?

Set it up as 10% of the job value paid only after the work is done and invoiced, not upfront promises.

Yeah, that 10% kicked in for me last year and saved a ton of headaches.

10% is too low for big jobs like deck repairs, I do flat $100 minimum.

Texas clients are the worst for this crap, always trying to game the system with fake referrals.

Handyman referrals turning into a nightmare across the board, these cheapskates ruin it for everyone.

I tell clients upfront: referral bonus only if the new job hits $500, and I laughed when one tried to refer his own leaky toilet fix as a 'friend'.

Haha, that's gold. Had a guy refer his neighbor who was the same damn person.

Don't offer cash, give them a free tune-up on their tools instead, weeds out the fakers quick.

How do you track if it's a real referral without turning into a damn accountant?

Make them fill out a quick form with the referral's contact info before the job starts, easy peasy.

Forms work, but in Texas heat, clients forget to sign anything lol.

This referral BS is why I stopped doing them altogether, too much drama for small jobs like patching drywall.

Yeah, walked away from a $300 referral that turned into a complaint fest.

Verify the referral with a phone call to the new client before payout, saved me from a scam last week.

I get it, those Dallas folks especially love to push boundaries on every deal.

Just switched to gift cards for referrals, less hassle and clients actually use 'em on supplies.

Frustrated as hell, my last referral program cost me $400 in bogus payouts before I nuked it.

I hear ya, been burned twice on shelf installs that weren't even real leads.

Try tiered referrals: $25 for small fixes, $75 for anything over a day, and require proof of the intro.
