im down here in south florida and just got hit with a $450 renewal fee for my handyman cert, plus another $200 for the background check they make you do every two years. its BS how these fees keep climbing while i barely pull in enough from small jobs like installing ceiling fans and patching drywall to cover it. feels like the states squeezing us solo guys dry just to keep the license plate.

look into joining a local trade association, they sometimes negotiate bulk discounts on renewals and can hook you up with retirement IRAs tailored for us independents.

yep, every renewal i gotta dip into my savings just to stay legal. cant afford to let it lapse tho.

south florida handymen unite, this crap is killing our retirement dreams before they even start.

total rage fuel, i calculated id need to save an extra 10% just to offset these fees long term.

ive seen guys in my area just go unlicensed to avoid the hassle, but that bites you in the end with fines.

set up a solo 401k through fidelity, its low fee and lets you sock away up to 23k a year tax free even with irregular income from handyman gigs.

we all feel that squeeze, especially when a slow month hits and youre scraping by.

its like they want us to quit before we can even think about saving for retirement.

try negotiating payment plans with the licensing board, some states let you spread it out to ease the cash flow hit on small repair jobs.

ive started tracking every fee as a business expense to deduct come tax time, helps a bit with the retirement buildup.

screw this, im thinking of moving my operation to georgia where handyman licensing is cheaper and less of a yearly nightmare.

controversial take: just ignore the renewals and operate under the radar. most inspectors dont check small jobs like fixture installs anyway, saves you thousands over a career.
