Been doing this handyman gig for a solid 10 years now, fixing everything from leaky faucets with SharkBite fittings to installing those damn IKEA cabinets in awkward kitchens. Just crossed the milestone of my 500th repeat customer, but out here in rural Ohio, I'm seeing all these solo operators undercutting on basic jobs like deck repairs or drywall patches. I thought building a rep with Milwaukee tools and fair pricing would pay off, but now everyone's going the TaskRabbit route and it's killing the value of experience. Saw a thread on r/handyman where guys were venting about the same crap, and someone in Handyman Nation group mentioned Tommy Mello's take on scaling up. Feels like the trade's turning into a race to the bottom, and I'm over here with a loaded van wondering if it's worth it. Anyone else hitting this wall?

Focus on niching down to high-end remodels; that's where the real money hides from those gig apps.

Fuck these apps, they're turning good trades into Uber drivers. We all feel it.

Exactly, lost a $800 fence repair job to some kid charging half because he 'knows a guy' for materials.

Same here, had to fire a client who wanted TaskRabbit prices but my quality work.

Congrats on 10 years, man. Build a website showcasing your before/afters to stand out.

Good call, I added testimonials from my lock installs and doubled inquiries.

Yeah, but in small towns, word of mouth still beats digital every time.

Those solo guys burn out fast; your experience will win long-term jobs like full kitchen flips.

True, I turned down a quick fence gig for a $4k deck rebuild that lasted weeks.

Screw the milestone, it's all about the cash flow now. Raise your rates 20% and see who sticks.

Apps are the devil; they don't cover liability on botched jobs like ours.

Heard a story of a guy getting sued over a bad shelf install from one of those platforms.

Yup, stick to direct clients who value not having their house flood from cheap fixes.

Lost a buddy to that; he was patching drywall and the whole wall caved.

10 years? That's veteran status. Mentor an apprentice to offload the small stuff.

Milestones mean jack when PE firms are buying up territories and pricing us out.

Felt that after my 8-year mark; knees shot from constant ladder work on porch repairs.

Same, back's screaming from hauling lumber for sheds. Time for a helper?

Don't sweat it, the cream rises; your tool knowledge alone beats newbies with Harbor Freight crap.

Rural areas are brutal, but network with realtors for steady remodel referrals.

Spot on, got my best leads from showing off a pergola build to a local agent.

Controversial take: milestones are BS if you're not at $100k+; scale or die.

Haha, remember my first year? Thought hanging shelves was the pinnacle, now it's custom built-ins.

Gig economy's screwing everyone; we need a handyman union or something.

Those one-man shows flop when winter hits and they can't handle big repairs like roof patches.
