Been in the Chicago area my whole career, and man, this job had me shaking my head. Got called out to fix a wobbly deck railing on this old two-story colonial, customer was breathing down my neck the whole time, insisting I hurry up because her 'bridge club' was coming over. I was up on the ladder with my DeWalt 20V circular saw cutting new pressure-treated 2x6s when she starts yelling from below about how it's taking too long and she's not paying extra. Nearly lost my footing on a slick rung, but caught myself just in time, heart pounding like crazy. Saw a similar story in the Handyman Nation Facebook group last month, guy wasn't so lucky. Proud I kept my cool and finished safe, quoted her $450 for the repair including materials, she paid up without more BS. Lesson learned: always double-check ladder setup around pushy types.

Always set ground rules with clients before climbing, like 'no distractions while I'm up high'. Saved my ass more than once.

This. And use those stabilizer bars on extension ladders, worth the extra 20 bucks.

Stabilizers are a game-changer, especially on uneven yards like in older Chicago neighborhoods.

And wear those harnesses if it's over 6 feet, code says so and it works.

Harness saved me from a 10-foot drop last summer, highly recommend the Klein one.
