Chasing payments on small handyman jobs is driving me nuts

I've been doing handyman work for a couple months now, mostly fixing leaky faucets and hanging shelves around the neighborhood. Just finished patching up some drywall in a kitchen with my DeWalt cordless sander, and the homeowner promised payment next week but it's been radio silence. I use QuickBooks for invoicing, but following up feels awkward, like I'm begging. Saw a post in Handyman Nation group where someone suggested a late fee, but I'm worried it'll scare off future jobs. Anyone got tips for collections without burning bridges? This side gig is supposed to be easy money, not a collections agency. FML.

i'm so damn sick of chasing these cheapskates for every nickel after busting my ass on their leaky bullshit, it's like they think handymen work for free.

set up automated reminders in QuickBooks right after you invoice, that way it's the system nagging them not you. been using it for a year now and it cuts the awkward calls in half.

Add a line on your invoice for 1.5% interest after 30 days, it works without you having to say a word.

Ugh, same here with a guy who owed for AC tune-up, had to show up at his door with the invoice in hand. Felt like a damn bill collector, not a pro.

That's when you hit em with the mechanics lien notice, scares the crap out of them.

Lien? For a $200 job? Overkill, just eat it and move on.

Totally, it's like they forget we're the ones keeping their houses from falling apart.

Man, I feel your pain, had a similar run-in last month on a fence repair gig.

Try Housecall Pro, it automates reminders and makes you look professional instead of desperate.

Set terms upfront: 50% deposit for jobs over a certain size, no exceptions.

Deposits changed my life, now I only work with serious clients.

Been there, just small claims it if they ghost you long enough.

I hit 6 figures last year by only taking jobs from referrals, cuts out the deadbeats.

Screw the homeowners who pull this, time to unionize or something.

Big corps are swooping in and undercutting us, making collections even harder with their deep pockets.

Hate when clients think handymen are pushovers, had to fire one last week over payment drama.

Don't let it get to you, most pay up eventually if you stay firm.

Frustrated as hell, just lost a whole afternoon chasing a $150 check that bounced.

PSA: always run a credit check on new clients if it's a big job, saved my ass more than once.
