I've been doing handyman work for 15 years now, fixing everything from leaky faucets with SharkBite fittings to mounting TVs on drywall anchors. Seen a lot of guys in the trade burn out and have nothing saved because we don't get those corporate retirement plans. I switched all my savings to a Roth IRA last year after watching that Tommy Mello video on financial freedom for small biz owners, and it's tax-free growth which beats the hell out of traditional IRAs for us self-employed folks. Guy in Handyman Nation Facebook group was ranting about how 401k rollovers just screw you on fees and taxes down the line. TBH, if you're a solo handyman pulling odd jobs, Roth is the way to go for flexibility when you finally hang up the DeWalt drill. Don't listen to those bank advisors pushing their crap, they're just after commissions. Asked about this on r/handyman and got mixed advice, but my CPA swears by Roth for trades like ours. Edit: Just realized I forgot to mention, pair it with a solo 401k if you have any employees.

Screw the banks, they're the real thieves with those rollover fees eating into our hard-earned cash from patching decks and installing shelves.

Haha, yeah my rollover last year turned into a $500 fee party, felt like I was paying for the teller's lunch.

Don't get me started on solo 401ks, I set one up thinking it'd save me time and ended up with more paperwork than a full kitchen reno.

Man, I feel you on the burnout part. After 20 years of swinging hammers and hauling lumber, my savings were zilch until I got serious about Roth contributions.

Same here, brother. Knees are shot from all the ladder work, but that Roth is starting to look like my ticket out.

You're spot on about the tax-free growth, been socking away since I started my handyman side gig and it's already compounding nicely.

LOL, my advisor tried to sell me on a traditional IRA, I told him I'd rather invest in more cordless tools than his fee structure.

Private equity vultures are circling handyman businesses now too, buying us up and then dictating our retirement plans. Fight back with your own Roth setup.

Hit my first $100k in savings this year after dumping everything into a Roth, feels damn good after all those late nights fixing gutters and vents.

I hear ya, been in the game 10 years and watching peers retire broke sucks. Switched to Roth and sleep better knowing it's mine, no taxes later.

Set up a Roth through Vanguard, low fees and easy for us handymen to contribute from job invoices. Skip the banks, do it online in 10 minutes.

Vanguard's solid, yeah. No BS fees like the big banks.
