Reviews are killing my handyman leads - how to fix this?

Been doing handyman work for 8 years now, mostly small fixes like door repairs and shelf installs around the greater Atlanta area, and reviews used to bring in steady gigs from Google and Nextdoor. But last month, one pissed-off customer left a 1-star rant about a delayed gutter cleanout I did during that freak storm, even though I showed up the next day and fixed it free. Now my overall rating dipped to 4.2, and leads from Angi are drying up fast - I saw a similar complaint in the Handyman Nation Facebook group where guys said bad reviews tanked their bookings by 30%. Switched to asking for reviews right after jobs with a simple text template, but not sure if that's enough. Tommy Mello talks about reputation management in his videos, but applying it to solo handyman ops feels tricky. Anyone got tips on turning this around without paying for fake reviews?

Those lead gen sites like Angi are total BS, they charge you an arm and a leg then bury your profile if ratings slip - screw em, focus on direct referrals instead.

Try responding to every review publicly, even the bad ones, explain what happened and how you fixed it. Boosted my response rate to 100% and ratings climbed back up in a couple months. Also, offer a small discount on the next job for leaving an honest review.

Yeah, but in my experience, some customers just keep piling on no matter what you say back.

FML, had the exact same issue with a deck repair job where the wood warped in the humidity - one review and poof, no more inquiries for weeks. Waste of time chasing these platforms when word of mouth should be king.

Angi and Thumbtack are ripping off handymen left and right with their algorithms favoring big outfits, it's a rigged game for us small timers. Build your own site and push SEO hard - that's where the real leads hide.
