Hey folks, as a handyman doing a lot of outdoor fixes, I gotta stress getting permits for any deck or porch work over 200 sq ft. Last summer in Seattle, I quoted a simple rail replacement at $1,200, but the city inspector caught the unpermitted job from the previous guy and hit the homeowner with a $500 fine plus redo costs. Don't risk it - check your local building dept first, it's worth the extra hour on paperwork to avoid that headache.

yeah seattle's rule is no permit needed for repairs under $6,000 in six months but always verify with sdci to stay on the safe side.

Smart move advising that - I've seen too many handymen get their licenses yanked over skipped permits on small jobs like fences or sheds. Just file the app online, it's usually under $100 and keeps everything legit.

Damn right, I pulled permits on a backyard pergola job two years back and the inspector even gave me tips on better anchoring that passed first time. Felt like a pro after that, no callbacks needed.

Inspectors sharing tips? Lucky break, most around here are just looking to shut you down. But yeah, better safe than dealing with the city's bullshit fines.

Fuck these city hall clowns, they nickel and dime us on every permit while letting DIY disasters slide. Handymen get screwed hardest on these residential gigs.

Totally get the rage, man - same crap everywhere, permits costing more each year while they underfund the inspectors. We're out here busting ass and they treat us like the enemy.
