This Permit BS for Deck Repairs Is Killing Small Handymen Like Us in Rural Ohio

Man, I've been doing handyman work out here in rural Ohio for 15 years, fixing everything from leaky faucets to sagging decks, and this permit crap is getting ridiculous. Just yesterday I had to pull a permit for a simple 10x12 deck repair job because the inspector said it involved structural changes under the local building code, even though it was just replacing a few rotted joists. Cost me $150 in fees and half a day waiting around, and the homeowner got pissed about the delay. I'm a one-man show, no big crew or fancy insurance setup, and now every little fix risks turning into a paperwork nightmare. Anyone else dealing with this? Saw a thread on r/HomeImprovement about inspectors going overboard lately. Feels like they're trying to squeeze us small guys out.

same BS here in rural ohio, inspectors treating every joist swap like its a full rebuild just to justify their jobs. cost me a whole morning last week on a nothing repair, and the homeowner was fuming about the holdup. its like theyre out to bury us small timers under fees and delays. been there brother, hangs on.

this permit BS is straight up killing my side gigs too, had to shell out $200 just to replace some deck posts last month and the inspector nitpicked every damn thing. feels like theyre gunning for us small timers to force us into big company jobs or somethin. im barely breakin even after fees and waitin around, and the customers always blame me for the hassle. screw this, might have to stick to indoor fixes only.

inspectors are just power-trippin bureaucrats who couldnt swing a hammer to save their lives, why the hell should we pay em to tell us how to fix a damn ledger? screw the permits, im doin em under the table from now on.

tell ya what, i started callin myself a 'consultant' for deck fixes so the inspector thinks im just there to sip coffee and nod, saves me $150 every time lol.

those damn inspectors are straight up trying to bury us small guys alive with this permit nonsense. every time i touch a deck or porch out here, it's like they're waiting to slap on another $200 fee just to replace a couple boards that wouldnt hold a damn bird. it's all about padding their budgets while we bleed time and cash on jobs that should take an afternoon. homeowners dont get it either, they think we're dragging our feet when really it's the BS red tape screwing everyone. if they keep this up, half of us handymen will be out of business before next summer.

yeah man, these rural ohio inspectors hit me with a $150 permit fee last week just to swap out three rotten joists, and the homeowner bitched the whole time thinking i was the one jacking up the price.

check your local code, but swapping less than 25% of the deck boards usually flies without a permit in rural spots like ours. just document everything with photos to cover your ass if they come sniffing around.

screw the permits, i've been skirting them for years on deck jobs like yours and never had an inspector show up unless someone snitched. out here inspectors are more interested in hassling big contractors for kickbacks than chasing small handymen fixing a couple rotted joists. it's all about controlling the market so only the connected guys with crews and lawyers can bid on anything over 100 sq ft. last summer i replaced an entire ledger board without pulling anything and the homeowner saved 200 bucks, no issues. if every little repair needs a 150 fee, we're all gonna be out of work while the code nazis pat themselves on the back. you ever just tell the inspector to pound sand and do the work anyway?

yeah, these damn inspectors in ohio are turning every minor deck fix into a full-blown permit circus, and it pisses me off how it's running small outfits like mine out of jobs.

yeah man, that permit BS is straight up killing the little guys like us out here in rural ohio too. i had a similar crap show last month on a deck ledger replacement, inspector hit me with a $120 fee and made me redraw the whole plan because it touched the house foundation code. homeowners always get bent out of shape over the extra time, like it's my fault the county's on a power trip. feels like they're pushing us independents right out the door so only the big outfits with their fancy lawyers can play. been there more times than i can count, it's exhausting.

had an inspector once tell me replacing a single spindle on a porch rail needed a full structural review, like i was building the eiffel tower out of toothpicks. cost the homeowner an extra $200 and me a headache, but hey, at least i got to practice my best 'yes sir' smile while twiddlin my thumbs. out here in rural spots, these guys act like every nail is a national security threat. prolly just bored and wanna justify their coffee breaks.

those damn inspectors in ohio are on a power trip, turning every joist swap into a $150 fee fest just to bury us small timers while the big contractors slide by.

Screw the inspectors, they're just power-tripping on us independents while the big contractors slide by with their lawyers and bribes. Rally up, we need to fight this bureaucracy before it buries the whole trade.
