Set up a referral program last month offering folks a $50 gift card for every handyman deck repair lead that turns into a job, thinking it'd bring in steady work on those sagging cedar decks around here. But damn, now I'm swamped with calls for everything from minor board replacements to full teardowns, and half the referrals are from neighbors who think I'm the cheapest fix-it guy in town. Watched that Essential Craftsman video on building solid decks, so I started pushing for proper lag screws and pressure-treated lumber, but these leads want quick patches with whatever's on hand. It's turning into a crap-show trying to qualify them over the phone without wasting time on-site. PSA to any handymen running similar setups: vet your incentives or you'll end up quoting jobs that aren't worth the drive. Already had to turn down three lowball asks this week alone. FML.

had the same damn problem with my referral setup last year, ended up chasing tire-kickers all over town for jobs that barely covered gas.

try adding a quick qualifier script on the phone, like askin if theyve got a joist that needs replacin or just a loose board, saves me drivin out for junk calls. works alot better than guessin from their vague emails.

been there with referral deals turning into a flood of cheapskate calls, its a total time suck. had to start charging a $75 site visit fee just to weed em out.

man, referrals sounded great til every cheap bastard started calling for free estimates on their sagging decks. i wasted half a day last week driving to three no-shows who just wanted pics for their DIY crap. now im charging $100 just to show up, and its still a pain in the ass.

dont offer gift cards on referrals like that, i got burned last summer when every tom dick and harry started calling for free fixes on their rotting joists. ended up eating hours on-site qualifying crap that wouldnt even pay for the gas. set a minimum job size like $500 before the incentive kicks in, or youll be chasing shadows all season.

yeah, slap a $750 minimum on those referrals or you'll be fixing every wobbly board for peanuts. i started requiring a full joist inspection quote upfront and it weeded out the tire-kickers real quick.

tie the referral to a $750 minimum job like i do, and make em book an actual service call first so you're not wasting time on tire-kickers. had the same issue last year with folks calling about sagging decks that turned out to be total teardowns. now i require a $100 deposit upfront for the consult, which covers my time if they bail. keeps the real customers coming and weeds out the cheapos quick.

how do you qualify leads over the phone without giving away too much of your process?

dont offer cash incentives next time, had a buddy do that and ended up with a flood of tire-kickers who ghosted after the free consult. stick to post-job referrals only or you'll be chasing shadows for weeks.

those damn cheapskate neighbors are the WORST, always chasing the bargain fix and turning every referral into a lowball nightmare that screws us all over.

try adding a $100 minimum project value to your referral terms so you filter out the cheap patch jobs before they waste your time.

man, been there with referral deals turning into a parade of cheapskate calls... feels like everyone's got a 'quick fix' budget these days.

set up a quick qualifier script on the phone: ask if the deck's got visible rot or just loose boards, and what their budget range is before you even mention the referral card. helps weed out the tire-kickers without burnin too much time. i've been usin somethin like that for a year now and it cut my no-shows in half.

those damn cheapskate neighbors ALWAYS flood us with lowball crap when we try to run a decent referral program, its like they smell easy money and ruin everything for the real work.

man i tried something similar with my yard sign referrals and ended up with a buncha cheapskates wanting free fixes on their rotting fences. its frustrating as hell turning em down when youre just tryin to build the business.

Fuck these referral programs, man. Every time I try one for my drain unclogging side gigs, I get flooded with BS calls from people who 'heard from a friend' but won't pay for the real work. Handymen like us get screwed the hardest because everyone thinks we're the jack-of-all-trades fix for free.

Haha, sounds like my last referral chain: started with a simple gutter cleanout, ended with the homeowner asking if I moonlight as a clown because their kid's birthday party needed tents. Told 'em I'd refer them to Party City instead.

man, referrals always start simple and turn into a circus around here too. told a guy id fix his fence, next thing hes asking if i cater weddings.

man, been there with my own referral BS, every 'friend of a friend' call turns into a haggling nightmare.
