Been in the Chicago area my whole career, and yesterday I had this furnace replacement on an old Trane XR16 that was toast. We were swapping it out for a Carrier Infinity 98, but when I hooked up the new 24V transformer, I forgot to double-check the polarity on the R and C wires, and damn near shorted the whole control board. Good thing my apprentice caught it before I powered up, or we'd have fried $800 worth of electronics. Saved the day with a quick meter check, and the job ran smooth after that, superheat spot on at 12 degrees. Proud of the team for catching my slip, makes me double-check everything now. Saw a similar story on r/HVAC last week about a guy who didn't and had to redo the whole install.

Polarity on transformers ain't a joke, I've seen it take out entire panels in commercial jobs. You dodged a bullet there, but why even risk it with Carrier when Trane's more reliable?
M

Trane loyalist much? Carrier's fine if you don't screw up the wiring.

Yeah, but Trane holds up better in humid areas.

FML, had a boss who made us skip those checks to 'save time', ended up with three callbacks in a week on mini splits.
