Been doing HVAC installs in the Chicago area my whole career, and man, the clients who come at you with their YouTube knowledge are the worst. Last week I had a guy insisting his Carrier Infinity system just needed a 'quick refrigerant top-off' because he saw some video on superheat adjustment, but it was actually a bad TXV valve acting up in the R-410a lines. I tried explaining the proper diagnostic process, checking pressures and all, but he kept pushing back saying I'm trying to upsell him. What I do now is walk them through the basics like subcooling readings on a real manifold gauge set, show them the numbers, and if they still argue, I quote the full repair at $850 including the part. Sometimes they back down, sometimes you gotta fire them as a client. Saw a similar rant in the HVAC Techs Network group the other day. Anyone got tips for handling these know-it-alls without losing your cool?

same here, every job has one guy who watched a 5-min video and thinks he's HVAC school grad.

nah, just tell them straight up: 'you fix it or pay me to redo your hack job'. fight me if that's not the way.

yeah, it's exhausting. just nod and do the work right anyway.

don't engage, document everything with photos of the gauges and system state before you touch it.

i pull out my fieldpiece gauges, show real-time readings, and let the data shut them up. works 80% of the time.

controversial take: some sharkbite-style quick fixes on refrigerant lines are fine if they're not the main issue. saves time.

start with a flat rate diagnostic fee, $150, covers your time to educate without giving away free advice.

same struggle, but hey, turned a bad client into a referral once by fixing their mess from a mitsubishi hyperheat botch.

client thought adding freon to his old trane was free, like oil in a car. explained the epa regs, he paid up quick.

use a quick video demo on your phone from bryan orr's channel to show why their idea won't work. visual proof seals it.

for the love of god, never let them touch the brazing torch unsupervised. saw a flash fire almost start last season.
