Up here in north jersey zone 5, I just canned a Carrier tech who couldnt get superheat right on a R-410a system during install, cost me $4500 in callbacks and pissed off customers. Guy had 5 years but kept guessing instead of using gauges, and now Im short-staffed with winter coming. Saw a similar rant in HVAC Techs Network group last week, but IMHO if they cant nail basics like that, theyre dead weight. Anyone else drawing the line on performance metrics like this? Watched a Bryan Orr video on hvacschoolpodcast that backed me up, no room for half-assed work.
Thats weak, performance metrics are just code for squeezing more OT out of em without paying up.

LOL sounds like my old boss, fired me for not 'hustling' enough on a frozen Trane unit in the snow.

Metrics or not, if they cant charge a line set right, they gotta go. Saved my ass on a zoning job last month.

Fuck these PE-backed shops turning HVAC into a sweatshop, firing good techs left and right.

Had to let go of a newbie last week, kept mixing up PEX lines with refrigerant, what a mess.

Same here, zone 4 Georgia heatwaves mean no tolerance for sloppy installs.

Fired my lead for botching a Mitsubishi ductless, clients complaining about uneven cooling.

Corporate assholes ruining the trade, metrics just another way to cut corners.

If they cant handle subcool on a scroll compressor, yeah fire em, lifes too short for callbacks.

But train first? Or straight to the curb?

Solid advice, I use FieldEdge to track their metrics before pulling the trigger.

Big corps dictating who we hire, tired of it.

Felt that, lost a good tech to burnout from the pressure.

train 'em on the txv adjustments for those brutal minnesota lows, gets superheat within 5 degrees every time. i use a fieldpiece job link to monitor remotely and avoid callbacks. numbers games suck but documenting the training protects you legally if they still miss. switch to trane units if you can, their metering is more forgiving in zone 5.
