Had this client today who watched one YouTube video and now swears his DIY Senville unit is gonna cool the whole house without a pro install. I showed up to quote a proper ductless setup with Mitsubishi Hyperheat, but he starts arguing about line set sizing and superheat like he's some EPA 608 wizard. Told him straight up that his backyard hack job is gonna leak refrigerant in a year, but nah, he thinks I'm just pushing upsells. SMH, these know-it-all homeowners are the worst part of residential calls. Saw a similar rant in the HVAC Techs Network group last week, everyone's dealing with this BS. Anyone got a good comeback for when they pull the 'I read it online' card? FML.

next time hit 'em with 'yeah i read that too, but the mitsubishi app showed my last install saving 25% on energy vs that senville crap.' keeps it factual without arguing. then pivot to asking what their actual load calc is, most shut up when they realize they skipped that step. works every time on the youtube experts. saves you the headache of walking away pissed.

what's the dumbest online myth these homeowners throw at you when you're quoting mini-splits?

honestly, if they're that set on their youtube wisdom, just walk away and let the refrigerant leak turn their house into a swamp cooler. pros like us waste too much time arguing with homeowners who wouldnt know superheat from a hole in the ground.

those youtube-fueled idiots are ruining the trade, always quoting some bs video while their hack installs turn into refrigerant leaks and call-backs that waste everyone's time.

tell 'em to cycle the mini-split down instead of powering it off completely, keeps mold from building up in the coils. i had a guy swear by some youtube hack that fried his mitsubishi unit in a month, but explaining the basics shut him up.
