Been doing HVAC installs in the Chicago area my whole career, and yesterday was a real wake-up call. I was pulling a bad evaporator coil out of a Trane XR system in this old ranch house, forgot to lock out the main disconnect, and when I went to yank the wiring, the damn thing sparked up because it was still hot at 240V. Heart stopped for a second, could've been a trip to the ER or worse if that arc hit right. Double-checked everything after that, shut down the breaker properly, and finished the job without more drama. These near-misses are getting too close lately with all the rushed service calls. Saw a thread on r/HVAC about similar panel shocks last week, made me rethink my lockout routine. Moral of the story: always verify power off, even if you think you did.

man, those heart-stopping sparks on a live 240V are the worst, been there a couple times and it makes you double-check every damn breaker from then on.

grab a fluke meter and test for zero volts at the panel every time, saved my ass on a similar 240v swap last month.

don't ever skip that lockout/tagout step, i saw a guy get arced in a live panel last year and he's still got scars from the burns.

dodged my own arc flash bullet last month on a 240v swap by always tagging out the disconnect first, feels damn good to say i havent fried myself in 10 years.

glad you walked away from that one, brother; i've turned every near-miss into a strict double-check ritual with my lockout kit and haven't had a single spark in 15 years of chicago winters.

Insurance companies love hearing about these close calls, said no one ever. We're all one dumb move from a claim that jacks up premiums.

Haha, yeah, mine spiked $800 last year after a minor refrigerant leak incident. Boss made us all take that online safety course, felt like kindergarten.
