lessons from the worst client i've ever had in landscaping

had a nightmare client last summer who wanted a full backyard redesign with native plants and a drip irrigation system but kept changing her mind on the layout. we're in Texas so the heat makes everything twice as hard, and she wouldn't approve the sod type until the last minute, which delayed the whole job by two weeks. i should've walked away when she haggled over the $2500 quote, but figured it'd be quick money. turns out she complained to the HOA about the crew noise, even though we scheduled around their rules. biggest lesson: always get every detail in writing before breaking ground, and trust your gut on picky homeowners. saw a similar rant in the Landscaping Professionals Facebook group last month, guy lost a whole contract over it. NGL, it cost me more in stress than it was worth.

get everything in a detailed contract from day one, saves your ass every time.

right? one time they fined us for 'excessive dust' during a simple mulching job.

man that sucks, i had a similar one who wanted revisions mid-install and blamed me for the delays.

drip systems are a pain with indecisive clients, charge extra for changes after approval.

exactly, i add a $500 redesign fee now if they tweak plans onsite.

i feel your pain, brother, these types always think they're the next landscape architect.

never trust a client who nitpicks sod, they're trouble from the jump.

yep, walked off a job last year over that exact bs.

put a clause in your contract for change orders with minimum fees, it's standard now.

good advice, wish i'd done that on my first big yard redo.

started doing it after one client tried to dock pay for her own delays.

HOA complaints are the worst, document your schedule and notify them ahead.

did that once, still got hit with a fine, fought it in small claims and won.

texas heat plus picky clients? recipe for burnout, take the deposit and run next time.

had to redo a whole flower bed because she 'didn't like the colors' after planting.

native plants in texas? good choice but yeah, clients don't get the maintenance.

never skip the signed layout or you'll be digging up your own work for weeks. had a client once who changed their mind mid-install and it cost me $2k in redo fees.
