Dropped $800 on my Landscape Contractor License renewal this year - worth it?

Just shelled out $800 for the renewal on my Landscape Contractor License through the state board, and now I'm second guessing if it's even paying off with all the irrigation cert add-ons. Guys in the Landscaping Professionals FB group are bitching about the same crap, saying the fees keep climbing while jobs stay seasonal. Anyone else feeling this pinch on licensing for mulch installs and sod jobs?

god damn it, that renewal hit me like a ton of bricks last month, had to eat the cost just to keep bidding on commercial lots.

haha, i renewed mine and celebrated with a beer, then the state sent a surprise audit on my paver permits.
L

audits are the worst, they nitpick every sod square foot like it's their money.

these state boards are screwing us landscapers hard, charging premium for certs that barely get used outside HOA rules.
P
PaintSplatterPat4⚒️ Journeyman3mo
21
exactly, it's all about control, not safety on those retaining wall jobs.

fuming over here, paid $800+ and still can't touch certain irrigation systems without extra bullshit from the board.

yep, the add-ons for drip lines are a scam, add another 200 easy.
D

drip lines certs are mandatory now in half the states, total racket.

at least you got a license, i started without one and nearly lost my ass on a mulch delivery dispute.
T

lmao, mulch disputes are comedy gold, customer thought 10 yards was a joke.
S

the whole system's rigged against small crews doing backyard makeovers.

we're all in the same boat, brother, $800 feels like robbery when margins on lawn installs are already thin.
H
HueHustler4⚒️ Journeyman3mo

thin as hell, especially with fertilizer prices up 30%.

try negotiating with the board for waivers on small jobs, worked for me once.
