So last month me and the crew took on this total crap-show of a backyard, overgrown with weeds taller than my Stihl trimmer and half the fence buried in dirt. Customer wanted a full redesign with sod, some river rock borders, and a couple Japanese maples in the corners, but the soil was pure clay so we had to amend it with about 20 bags of compost before even thinking about planting. Took us three full days of busting ass with the Bobcat to level everything out, and at the end the homeowner was in tears hugging us like we saved her marriage or something. NGL, felt pretty damn good seeing that before-and-after, especially after watching a Stanley Dirt Monkey video on hardscaping that gave me the push to push for that curved stone path. Saw a similar thread on r/landscaping where a guy botched his first big job, so I made sure to double-check all the drainage lines this time. Anyone else had a win that made the sore back worth it?

god, i hate when the soil is that bad, turns a simple sod job into a week long nightmare.

same here, just last week we fought clay for hours and my back is still screaming. feels good when it turns out right though.

don't ever skip the soil test on jobs like that, had one collapse after a rain and the whole thing washed out.

yeah, warning: always add perlite or something to improve drainage in clay, or you'll be back fixing it for free.

lmao, we once did a yard like that and the dog decided the new sod was his personal bathroom day one. win turned to loss real quick.

PSA: check for underground utilities before digging, nearly hit a gas line on a similar reno and that would've ended the day badly.

had a customer complain about the mulch color not matching, like bro we told you it fades in the sun.

hahaha, mine once said the grass was too green, wanted it 'more natural'. sent him a pic of his old weeds.

never trust a yard that hasn't been touched in years, always hides surprises like old stumps or critter nests.

yep, pulled out a rusted bike frame mid-dig once, client acted like it was my fault.

those maples gonna thrive? we lost one to poor prep last summer.

they should if you mulched right, but yeah zone matters a ton.

agreed, but skip the plastic weed barrier, it just suffocates the roots.

big corps are buying up all the local landscaping outfits, soon we won't have room for these passion projects.

upsell the maintenance contract after a win like that, keeps the cash flowing.

bobcat rental worth it? or stick to manual for small jobs?

mulch depth is key, too thin and weeds come right back through.
