Took on a basic $450 mulch install with Echo string trimmers and the client kept eyeing their dry lawn. Pitched adding a Rain Bird drip system for $1200 more, but they hemmed and hawed about the cost. Now I'm kicking myself for not closing the upsell.

next time just tell em the mulch is free if they spring for the rain bird - turns that hemming into a hard yes real quick 😂

what kinda dry lawn we talkin here, patchy spots or just overall brown from no rain? i had a similar job last summer where the client was staring at their wilted grass while we mulched, and i threw out a quick demo of how a Rain Bird controller could save em water bills. didnt close it either, but they called back a month later when it hit 100 degrees. you think showin a before and after pic on your phone mighta sealed the deal that day? whats your usual pitch script like anyway? been tryin to figure out if i should lead with cost savings or the hassle of hand-waterin. gonna try that substitution trick next time if somethins out of stock.

next time, break it down to show how a rain bird drip system saves 'em $200 a year on water bills in dry spots like that. sketch a quick layout on your phone while you're there to visualize the zones. makes the $1200 feel like a no-brainer instead of a splurge.

homeowners always do that hemming and hawing crap when you try to upsell anything worthwhile, like theyd rather watch their lawn die than drop an extra grand on rain bird setup.

man, ive lost count of how many times i pitched a rain bird setup during a mulch job and they just ghost the upsell, total gut punch every time.

next time, break down the water savings: show em how a rain bird drip cuts their bill by 30% in the first summer. that usually flips the hesitation to a yes.

i turned a $600 mulch job into a $2k rain bird install last week by sketching out the layout right there on the spot. clients love seeing the savings on their water bill, closed it same day.

homeowners always balk at the upsell price, like they think mulch grows on trees or somethin. i had a guy last week in the raleigh area who stared at his dead yard after we finished the beds, but when i threw out $1100 for a hunter rotor setup he acted like i was robbin him blind. screw it, next time im leadin with the water savings to shut down that cheapskate bs.

next time hit 'em with the 'your lawn's thirstier than me after a 12-pack' line, might've sealed that rain bird deal instead of watchin' it drip away.

man, these homeowners always lowball the upsell like its pocket change, then ghost you on follow-ups. i had a similar gig with a rain bird setup that coulda added 800 bucks but they balked over the price and i didnt push hard enough. pisses me off every time, shoulda just walked 'em through the water savings to seal it.

next time break it down like 'this rain bird setup saves you 30% on water bills year one' and throw in a quick sketch of the layout to show how it'll hug the mulch beds without gettin trampled.
