I've been in the locksmith game for about 6 years now, mostly doing residential rekeys and deadbolt installs with Schlage and Kwikset stuff. If you're thinking about getting into this, especially out here in the Dallas-Fort Worth area where competition is fierce, don't skip the licensing part. In Texas, you need to get registered with the Texas Department of Public Safety, which means passing a background check and a test on basic locksmithing skills like picking and impressioning. I remember when I started, I spent around 40 hours studying for the exam after taking a course from Associated Locksmiths of America. Also, some cities require a local business license plus liability insurance minimum of 100k to cover any lockout mishaps. Saw a thread on r/Locksmith about a guy getting fined for working without certs, and it was a nightmare. Guy in the Locksmith Professionals Facebook group mentioned Roger Wakefield's videos helped him prep for the test too. Bottom line, get your certs early to avoid headaches down the road.

This licensing BS is killing small guys. Spent $500 on fees last year just to renew, and inspectors barely check.
