Just saw this reddit post on r/FirstTimeHomeBuyer where a guy dealt with late, understaffed U-Haul movers for his first move and was asking for advice on permits and fees. For interstate hauls, I've been hit with $250 just for DOT permit paperwork on a Two Men and a Truck branded rig last month, and it's worth it to avoid fines. Skip that and you risk your license, especially with heavy loads.
