Walked into this interior job in the greater Atlanta area today and the homeowner decided to 'save time' by painting the baseboards with some cheap latex from Home Depot before we arrived. It's streaky as hell, drips everywhere, and they used the wrong sheen so now it doesn't match the Benjamin Moore Aura we quoted for the walls. I had to spend an extra two hours sanding and priming just to fix their amateur attempt, and they're acting like it's my fault for the delay. TBH, these DIY types make me wanna pull my hair out - saw a similar rant in the Painting Contractors Facebook group last week. Charging them for the cleanup feels right, but damn, it's always the same story with clients who think they know better. Anyone got a good line for shutting this down upfront?

Never let them touch a brush before you start. Document everything with photos before and after their 'help'.

Agreed, I send a contract clause now that says no client work without approval.

Use that as a teaching moment - show them the difference with a small test area using your Sherwin-Williams Emerald.

Smart, turns frustration into an upsell.

Or just quote the cleanup fee from the jump.

Haha same here, had a guy paint the ceiling with flat when we were doing eggshell.

Flat on ceiling? Rookie move, but yeah, adds $200 to the bill easy.

This crap happens weekly. In my area, we require a walk-through first to prevent it.

Ugh, clients like that are the worst. Feel your pain, brother.

Put it in your contract: any client-initiated work voids the warranty and adds labor charges.

Guy in the Professional Painters group shared pics of a worse one - walls splattered like abstract art.

Ask them why they hired you if they wanna do it themselves. Shuts 'em up quick.
