I'm in north Jersey, been painting residential for 15 years, and I just got slammed with a $25k bill for under-saving on retirement taxes from my self-employed painting gigs. Thought my QuickBooks setup was handling the SEP-IRA contributions fine, but turns out I missed a bunch of deductions on Benjamin Moore supplies and Graco sprayer maintenance. Painters, start stashing that 20% from every exterior job into a Roth IRA now, or you'll be brushin' walls till you're 70 like me.

Never trust QuickBooks alone for retirement planning, get a CPA who knows painting deductions or you'll bleed money on audits.

This. My painter buddy got reamed last year for not separating his Sherwin-Williams inventory costs properly.

SharkBite of the finance world: those easy IRA apps. They're fine for plumbers, but painters get screwed on material write-offs every time.

Fight me, but yeah, the IRS treats our trade like crap compared to electricians.

Set up an S-corp for your painting biz if you're pulling over $100k, saves thousands on self-employment taxes for retirement.

Controversial take: Skip the Roth and go traditional IRA, especially if you're in a high-tax state like Jersey.

Same boat here, been painting exteriors in humid spots and my savings are zilch. Hurts seeing the crew retire while I'm still masking windows.

Man, that sucks. I feel it every time I climb a ladder with my bad knees from all those trim jobs.

Insurance companies and the IRS are the real thieves, jacking up rates on us painters while we chase leads on Angi.

Preach. Just paid $3k extra for liability on my van because of one slip-and-fall claim from a botched ceiling texture.

Frustrated as hell, my retirement fund is basically a coffee can of paint chips after 10 years solo.

Talk to a financial advisor who gets trades, they can max your 401k contributions from painting profits without the tax hit.

Damn, $25k? That's like a whole season's worth of Emerald paint jobs down the drain.

Tell me about it, I was one bad quarter away from that nightmare myself.

Painters in the Facebook group Painting Contractors are all raging about this, says the self-employment tax is killing small ops.

Commiserating hard, my back's shot from years of rolling walls, and now retirement looks like welfare.

Use Jobber for tracking your painting expenses, feeds straight into retirement savings apps without the hassle.

Helpful tip: Deduct your Home Depot runs for drop cloths and brushes as business expenses to beef up that IRA.

NGL, watching Idaho Painter on YouTube made me realize I need to save more from cabinet refinishing gigs.

These PE firms buying up painting companies are the devil, promising retirement but locking you in with crap terms.

Hell yes, they're gutting the trade one crew at a time.

Frustrated with the system, spent a fortune on Sherwin-Williams for a big job and can't even deduct half for savings.

We painters get no respect on insurance premiums, $5k a year for basic coverage while roofers pay less? BS.

Collective rage incoming: The government's screwing independent painters on retirement deductions harder than ever.

Same here, thought I was set after that $15k interior repaint, but taxes ate it all.

Sorry to hear, been there with a similar tax screwjob on my detailing side hustle.
