Proud to say I just locked in a $2,800 annual policy with Sherwin-Williams' commercial general liability coverage, covers all my interior and exterior jobs without the BS exclusions that screwed me last year. Been painting for 10 years, and this feels like a weight off my shoulders when I'm up on that ladder spraying Emerald paint. No more worrying about a slip-up on a client's deck costing me everything.

how do you handle claims if something goes wrong on a big exterior job?
B
BugBusterJoe⚒️ Journeyman3mo
36
those insurance companies are all the same, jacking up premiums for nothing while we bust our asses painting in the rain.
B
BumpKeyBandit2⚒️ Journeyman3mo
26
fuck these insurers, they denied my claim last year over some bullshit paint overspray on a window, cost me 5k out of pocket.
D
DrainDragon8⚒️ Journeyman3mo
31
same here, had a similar mess with drips on siding, they called it 'negligence' even though I tarped everything.
J
JunctionJunkie2⚒️ Journeyman3mo
12
customer thought his cat ate the paint sample and sued, insurance laughed it off.
L
LeakHunter3⚒️ Journeyman3mo
16
goddamn carriers treat us like we're the problem, not the weather or cheap materials.
W
WattTheHeck25⚒️ Journeyman3mo
28
exactly, I had a hail storm ruin a fresh coat and they wouldn't touch it.
N
NailGunnerNed⚒️ Journeyman3mo
28
insurance is a scam, but try going without it and see how fast a lawsuit buries you.
D
DirtDevilDan⚒️ Journeyman3mo
27
my rates doubled after one false claim from a picky homeowner about fumes.
N
NotAnElectrician11⭐ Expert3mo
4
fumes? that's nothing, I got hit with a 'allergic reaction' claim from using low-VOC paint, total BS.
F
FixItFred2⚒️ Journeyman3mo
14
low-VOC my ass, still wrecked my policy.
J
JunctionJunkie2⚒️ Journeyman3mo
3
anyone know a good broker for painters specifically? tired of these generic quotes.
F
FlashingFox⚒️ Journeyman3mo
23
quoted a mansion last week, client wants full liability waiver but my insurer says no dice.
B
BrushStrokeBoss8⚒️ Journeyman3mo
17
we're all getting squeezed by these rising costs, makes bidding jobs a nightmare.
P

27
yep, added 10% to my estimates just for coverage now.
S
ShingleShaman⚒️ Journeyman3mo
12
fuck the insurers profiting off our sweat, time to union up or something.
K
KeyMaster992⚒️ Journeyman3mo
28
had a job where the ladder tipped and dented a car, claim processed fine but premium jumped 30%.
T
TileTerror8⚒️ Journeyman2mo
15
car dents are the worst, mine involved Sherwin-Williams too, they covered it but paperwork was hell.
P
PipeDreamer21⚒️ Journeyman2mo
27
i feel you, been paying through the nose for years on residential interiors.
H
HaulHero⚒️ Journeyman2mo

same, my back's killing me from hauling drop cloths and now insurance is killing my wallet.
J
JoltJumper⚒️ Journeyman2mo
19
these companies are vampires, sucking us dry on every policy renewal.
K
KeyMaster99⚒️ Journeyman2mo
23
vampires is right, my renewal letter was a 40% hike for no reason.
V
VentWizard⚒️ Journeyman2mo
15
switched to a smaller carrier last year, saved 500 bucks but coverage feels sketchy now.

don't skimp, I saw a guy get sued for a peel job and lost his truck to pay it off.
D
DrainDiver7⚒️ Journeyman2mo
20
peel jobs are liability nightmares, always document everything.
C
ChillMaster5⚒️ Journeyman2mo
24
my buddy ignored a small claim, now he's out 20k on a deck stain gone wrong.
C
ChillMasterHV⭐ Expert2mo
13
deck stains are tricky, moisture trapped under and boom, lawsuit.
B
BoltBuster4⚒️ Journeyman2mo
13
insurers hate painters cause we work outside, one wind gust and it's claim city.
T
TarheelTiler⚒️ Journeyman2mo

bundle with your tools insurance? I did and it dropped my rate a bit.
F
FurnitureFury⚒️ Journeyman2mo

bundling helped me too, but still highway robbery.
V

P
PipeDreamer12⚒️ Journeyman2mo
14
yeah, saw that, one guy said go self-insured for small jobs but that's risky as hell.
F
FloorFumbler2⚒️ Journeyman2mo
4
self-insured? no way, had a client slip on wet paint and it cost me 8k.
M
MopAndGlo⭐ Expert2mo
21
slips are brutal, my policy covered it but deductible ate my lunch.
W
WireWizard99⚒️ Journeyman2mo
15
these bastards raise rates after every little thing, even if you file nothing.
F

P

21

N
NotAnElectrician8⚒️ Journeyman2mo
23
try interior only, but even then, overspray claims happen.
C
CoilCleanerCal⚒️ Journeyman2mo
13
use plastic sheeting religiously, cut my claims in half.
S
SawdustSavant4⭐ Expert2mo
22
good advice, sheeting saved my ass on a kitchen job.
N
NailGunNed⚒️ Journeyman2mo
15
insurers should cover weather delays too, but nah.
S
SparkFreak⚒️ Journeyman2mo
23
weather is the real enemy, not us.
D
DoorJammer2⚒️ Journeyman2mo
31
one storm and your fresh coat is toast, claim denied every time.
K
KeyMaster2⚒️ Journeyman2mo
24
yep, denied mine last summer, had to repaint for free.
D
DoorOpener99⚒️ Journeyman2mo
16
had to eat the cost on a whole house exterior, 15k job turned nightmare.
W

shop brokers, I found one that specializes in trades, dropped my premium 200 bucks.
S
SpringSpecialist10⚒️ Journeyman2mo
3
which broker? need recs for painting gigs.
N
NailGunNinja7⚒️ Journeyman2mo
17
tradespecificinsurance dot com, they get it unlike the big boys.
S
ScrubSquad🔧 Apprentice2mo
26
big boys are crooks, always pushing add-ons you don't need.
S
SpraySavant4⚒️ Journeyman2mo
5
add-ons for ladder falls? yeah right, we climb that shit daily.
S
SodSlinger2⚒️ Journeyman2mo
26
ladders are death traps, my insurer made me buy certified ones.
D
DoorOpenerDan2⚒️ Journeyman2mo
26
certified ladders cost extra, another hit to the wallet.
M
MowAndBlowMan⚒️ Journeyman2mo
25
these policies are padded with crap we never use.
S
