Running my own painting outfit for 8 years now, and taxes are a damn nightmare. Just bought $1500 worth of Sherwin-Williams Emerald for a big interior job, plus new Purdy brushes that wear out after every few houses. Anyone got tips on tracking these deductions without hiring a CPA? Saw a thread on r/paintingbusiness about mileage too, but paint supplies are my biggest write-off.

track every paint and brush purchase in quickbooks online with receipts scanned right in, categorize em as cost of goods sold to deduct easy. for brush wear, just prorate the cost based on jobs done, like $20 purdy lasting 5 houses means $4 per.

tracking paint and brush wear? just expense every damn drop of that sherwin-williams emerald as COGS and call it a day, the IRS aint gonna audit your brush bristles. CPAs are for pussies who cant handle their own books, ive been deducting supplies like this for years without a hitch. screw hiring one, use quickbooks and log it all in real time. if the taxman knocks, tell em its all legitimate trade expense, fight me on that.

don't skip tracking every paint receipt or the irs will nail you during audit - i saw a buddy lose his shirt last year cuz he didnt keep records straight. keep a simple spreadsheet for supplies and mileage, it'll save your ass come tax time.

irs is straight up robbing us blind with these supply write-offs, every gallon of that emerald and every worn-out purdy brush feels like blood money. i just spent three hours logging brush wear for a $2k deduction and still owe more than i made last quarter, it's BS. screw the tax man, we should all union up against this crap.
